Should the volunteer fire department have been putting water on anhydrous ammonia? Does anybody here know enough about chemistry to know if this is a problem? I know that "anhydrous" literally means "without water". Obviously, fertilizer plants aren't supposed to blow up entire neighborhoods when they catch fire, so somebody fucked up.

Unfortunately, none of the first responders survived. :(

I would of thought after the OC attack, there would of been a limit to how much was stored in one place..

Ever summer hear in Phoenix we have fires , not that big . People dont usly get hurt. Places that store pallets , boxes , hay , ect. They pile up old tires in the middle of the desert , some times the piles catch fire making all kind of smoke . The dry river bottoms colect brush and trees , ever summer some of them catch fire .

when you mix it with water it turns into ammonium hydroxide, which is a common floor cleaner typically called ammonia.

The "anhydrous" portion of it--"without water"--refers to the fact that the chemical reacts with water, meaning the effects are especially damaging when they combine with the human body's moisture, whether that's in the eyes, lungs, or other parts of the body. When that happens, the reaction forms a highly basic solution that's very corrosive.

this is a conspiracy perpetrated by the jews to deter the economic production of fertilizer. In order so they may replace it with a more ecologically hazardous fertilizer, which can also be used to make pressure cooker bombs like that of the boston bombings. In short...the jews were behind the bombings on the marathon and consequently, this explosion as well.

From what I understand, anhydrous ammonia is stored in liquid form in containers under high pressure to make it liquid. At a particular pressure and elevated temperature, it can be explosive if there is oxygen available, such as oxygen in air or water. It may have been an unfortunate situation where it was at just the right conditions to go explosive in the presence of air or water.

The reaction that occurs near room temperature between ammonia and water is not explosive like that of pressurized liquid anhydrous ammonia when it sees air or water. Conclusions can't be made that water at the fire didn't play a part in the explosion.

No one really knows exactly what happened at the plant at this point.

Ammonium nitrate is different than liquid anhydrous ammonia.

It already has an oxidizer in it, whereas liquid anhydrous ammonia doesn't.

In Texas, safety regs are seen as liberal homosexual socialist sissy-boy infringements on Liberty. ALL safety regs. Or they were when i last lived there decades ago.

that's pretty much the conservative take on liberals it seems; safety and taking care of others = HOMOSEXUAL

Sounds like a lot more than that; more like criminal negligence on a level that should lead to serious prison time. That kind of an operation should not have been built close to houses.
