I am looking into getting a ferret, i have been researching it on the net and calling the pet stores for information and prices. the cheapest one i've found is $200. (spayed, shots, descented) plus the cage that would be another $65-$100. anyone got any advice or good websites?

You really would be better off buying from a good breeder. A good breeder can and will tell if there has been any medical problems in the lineage. Compared to a pet shop ferret that most likely comes from a Marshal Ferret Mill... I mean company where they're lucky to know which ferret was used in breeding. The price is a lot lower if you go to a breeder too it would be more like 150$. Or better yet adopting a ferret can be a great way to go you can find young kits often in shelters because people buy them without realizing that they have to be trained not to bite. Just a few things to consider. A really good book for any ferret owner is "Ferrets for Dummies" by Kim Schilling.

Please, please, please consider adopting from a shelter.

There are so many that need good homes...

That's what I was going to say. Great thing about shelters is that they can tell you about the particular animals character, dis/likes, funny habits etc.

Check out petfinder.com to find 'homeless' ferrets (or pets in general) in your area.

Don't know much about ferrets myself, but good luck with your future companion :)

Some advice about ferrets. They can cost you lot of money in medical bills. They have a lot of health problems so might want to do some research. I have had three and they all had insulinoma, two died of it. The current ferret I have now has it and he is on a special diet as well as medicine. Please read up on it and other problems. They are also prone to adrenal disease and certain kinds of cancer like Lymphoma. Ferrets should eat a high protein, low carb, no sugar diet. A lot of the treats that are for ferrets are full of sugar, which is undigestable to ferrets. They believe that a high sugar diet may lead to insulinoma in the future. Ferrets should eat a food with at least 40% protein, and low carbs. Meat is the best thing for them to eat.

Really knowledgable ferret vets are hard to find. I have been doing a lot of research. I am trying to learn as much as I can to keep my ferret alive a few more years. If you want any info or help feel free to email me. Good luck. They're worth the effort!
