I'm afraid of the dark... I suppose you all know, Fear of the dark translates into a fear of the Unknown. Could you help me get over it?

plenty of people are afraid of the dark, doesn't make you any less tough...
i've had the fear since i was a kid, should have outgrown it but didn't... probably because my dad is an evil SOB who told me IT the clown resided under my bed and there were aliens in my closet and freddy krugar lived in our backyard. fucking IT the clown isn't scary anymore but he was at the time.

the first quarter of her life was spent in the dark without electricity....

    i find it ironic

it is a common fear, i just find it amazing that a woman who has overcome so much fear in her life can be afraid of something so harmless....

it makes her more human and less saintly to me though, which in turn makes me love her and look up to her even more...

It may be the fear of unknown. All humans have the fear/curiosity of things we don't know. Lol, why do I run up the stairs at night when all the lights are out or grab something from a dark room then run out really quick like I'm being chased? Its because something could be there and I don't know it. I'm a pussy of the dark :(

You can't ever fear unknown. You can only fear the known.
You must be projecting into darkness your fears of what is already known to you.

Sure you can be scared of the known. But there's definitely a fear of the unexpected. The thought of not being able to control something. People don't like the unexplained. Why are kids scared of monsters in their closets? They don't know whats in there, it could be anything!

There is no fear of unexpected.
There is an imagination of something that might happen, which may scare, but that imagination is ultimately the product of what already exists in ones' head, thus already known.
Kids wouldn't be scared of monsters in the closet if they didn't have the idea of monster[in their minds] in the first place.

It would be a known fear if they were expecting something to happen and were scared of it. If they saw what a monster looked like and it attacked them once then they'd be scared of the known. What scares them is the idea that they don't know what a monster looks like or what it could do. Why are people scared of aliens? God?

You mean "known" in terms of definite in shape and image.
    But it's not necessarily so.
One doesn't have to have a photo-image of the monster per se or written schedule of its' appearance, in fact it would be enough to imagine that "it" may have whatever effect that incites fear , and that imagination of the effect alone is something that is already known and pre-exists in the mind of the child.
Same with all the other fears.

This is a technique, btw(exploitation of known fears) well studied and used in martial arts, like that of Japanese Ninjas and others.

What about people who are scared of the future or death? They know that it exists as an idea, the future and their death is inevitable and they can plan and think about it to get an idea of it but ultimately they don't know what's going to become of it

They don't know death , so they aren't really afraid of death.
But they know fear of death and imagine all kind of things that frighten them when they try to imagine death, and all these are the product of what is already known and exists in mind.

You mean you never scared yourself thinking about death? Lol, I know I do. What happens when you die? Is there a heaven? Reincarnation? Or the logical thought that everything you know is gone and there's eternal nothingness. That scares me and I don't know what it's going to be like

No, i didn't say that i never was afraid thinking of death.

Discussion was whether it is "known" or "unknown" which people fear and I said it imost cetainly is the known that frightens people.
One can't possibly fear unknown, it is what you know that frightens you.

Yeah death was just an example. No one can say that death is known. We have no idea what happens when we die, mainly because...we're dead

You don't know death per se so you can't possibly be afraid of death.

But you might feel scared thinking of it, and that thought, whatever idea you have of it that makes you feel scared , is what you already know, that's what already is in your mind, it has nothing to do with "unknown".
