Perhaps, but then they quickly turned into Symphonic Progressive. Jethro Tull is the best example of Progressive Folk. I assume you also like Jethro Tull?
I like the Canterbury Scene too, but I havne't listened to anything of it, but I;ve read on it and I know I would like this type of progressive rock.
The choice can't be made! There's too much quality from each. Though folk-prog is certainly up there. I command you all to listen to Comus.
I agree with lemon..and where is krautrock and fusion on the list? www.progarchives.com can school you on some prog rock!!
I wanted to include all the styles of Progressive Rock but I could only pick ten. The reason is lack of space.
Just voted for canterbury scene. But also I am very much infatuated with kraut rock especially with Can, Amon Duul II, Faust.
I enjoy a wide range of progrock: Genesis, Gentle Giant, Hatfield and the North, Egg, Caravan, Gong, The Strawbs as well as the new stuff: Spock's Beard, Ozric Tenatcles, Porcupine Tree, etc.
... while other type of progressive walk on earth or at best fly in the sky ...the space one visit other galaxy ...the best exemple is 70's Hawkwind music and 2fist Pink Floyd... It's maybe like the birds...who know what they talk 'bout us ... maybe... "look at those pretentious human...but look outside son...they know have the size of ants ..." I vote for the spacy progressive but i'm not sure it's my favourite... i like nearly all style of progressive...you can invent a planet just with progressive species. And the frontier between progressive rock territories and psychedelic rock is sometimes inexistant...think about it
Hi everyone. I'm new here to the forum...lol I posted a very lengthy intro last night, but anyway I'm surprised no one mentioned Emerson Lake and Palmer. I voted for "Symphonic prog rock" mainly because ELP was classic-oriented prog... stuff like "Knife Edge" and Keith Emerson's older group THE NICE doing that album-length "Ars Longa Vita Brevis" which was mainly a take on Bach's Brandenberg Concerto. The other 70's vintage prog groups you mentioned in the various posts I also like a lot- Genesis, Gentle Giant, Floyd (though they would probably be more accurately classified as psychedelia..especially their older stuff), Triumvirat, Yes and Rick Wakeman's solo stuff are all great. Anyone familiar with Patrick Moraz and Refugee? If not, they are worth a listen also. After Keith broke up the Nice to form ELP, Moraz gathered up the bassist and drummer from The Nice and formed Refugee in...1976, I believe..and recorded only one album unfortunately. It wasn't because Refugee was a failure, but because Yes had called him and he decided to leave Refugee and go back to Yes. Too bad for the 2 guys left out in the cold. Brian Davidson is a great drummer. I tend to really get wordy (look at my introduction-you'll see what I mean) so I'll leave this one here. Oh, and please take a look at my profile. My "homepage" is actually a podcast page where I have put up some of my own instrumental compositions. I'm not saying "look how GREAT I am", I'm asking for honest opinions on this stuff... I get so close to the work, I can't be objective about it any more. Any artist or musician will probably understand what I mean by that. Cheers! Tom in Florida
TGS!!!!!!!!!!!! a swedish psychedelic band (trad gras o stenar= trees grass and stones, in english) they still do live jams, and they are still great (they started in the late 60s).
