    Soy
More by default really, as I haven't really tried any other ones. It's fine so I don't really feel a need to.

Rice milk is my favorite, though I have yet to try almond or oat. I just can't find them in my area. I am lucky to find rice.

I said rice - I love vanilla rice milk. I can't stand soy, it has that horrible chalky taste to it. Haven't tried anything else yet (though I have a carton of almond milk in the cupboard, there's still rice milk in our tiny fridge and I'm slow with it so I'll probably wait till it goes bad to open a new one...)

I really want to try hemp milk - I hadn't even heard of such a thing until a thread popped up about it last week. My usual store only carries rice, almond and soy, so those are my choices.

Does anyone else have trouble finishing a whole carton withing the 7-10 days? What about cooking vs. drinking vs. cereal or something? Do you have different preferences depending on what you're doing? I'd heard that soy was better for baking, but I tried it last time I made vegan cornbread and didn't notice any difference. And I've made an effort lately to drink only water, so I won't be having a frosty glass of vegan milk! I'll probably just stick with rice unless I think the almond is way better. :)

What store did you find almond milk at, Hummblebee?

As far as cooking I have not really noticed a difference between soy and rice milk. I really don't drink it very much, just every now and then. So it can sit in the frige for awhile, probably too long. :)

I like soy milk, but I still drink cow milk... I don't eat meat... but milk don't kill a cow. I support vegans though and respect their choices

Walker, I found the almond milk at my local Kroger. :) It has a halfway decent health-food section, and they have a whole little mini-aisle with milk alternatives, and the almond milk was in a little carton just like most un-refridged vegan milks.

It's lucky for me, too, because the closest real HFS is all the way the other side of Nashvegas (about a 45 minute drive) and waaaayyyy overpriced.

Your Krogers is not over priced? The one close to me has rice milk outrageously priced. The soy milk is not bad, but the rice is crazy. I didn't see almond, but I will have to take another look as last time I was there I was just quickly scanning for something other than almond.

I understand. My nearest health food store is on the other side of town and is not worth the long drive.

lol... Yes, Krogers *is* outrageous most of the time, for most things. But Wild Oats is just unbelievable. I can't believe what they charge for most things. As far as the milk products go though, Kroger doesn't seem too bad. < 2.50 for rice milk. I think the Almond I bought a few days ago was just a few cents more than Rice Dream.

I've taken pretty good tabs of what is available at Wal-Mart, Kroger, and Wild Oats, and the prices of those things. Gotten into the routine of hitting Wal-Mart every couple weeks for groceries, Kroger in-between for odds and ends and health-food stuff I can't get at W, and Wild Oats doesn't happen for us but every couple months, because we can easily spend $50 there, and end up with about 2 days worth of food. :(

Sometimes. It depends. I've been on a huge granola kick lately, so it's been getting used up in less than three days.

I don't drink my soy/rice milk...I've never been a big straight milk fan, really, even before I went veggie.

WARNING: Don't try to make pudding with non fat soy milk.

    I tried...unsuccessfully.

I prefer soy milk, but that's mostly for cost reasons... I can find light generic soy (not nearly as chalky) at my local grocery store for $1 less per 1/2 gallon than any other milk alternate out there. My husband has to help me finish a carton before the expiration date though - I can never seem to get more than 1/2 - 2/3 of it finished. Fortunately he LOVES soy milk, so we've not wasted any since he started drinking it with me.

For cooking I prefer to use almond... it costs a little more (even to make, since almonds aren't cheap here) but tastes MUCH better in baked goods!
    love,
    mom

I've been reading "Milk: The Deadly Poison" by Robert Cohen and I am ready to try alternatives...
I found a how-to for soy milk and one for rice milk...I really don't want to spend a ton of money on specialty foods, I'd rather make my own.
    http://www.soya.be/how-to-make-soy-milk.php

    Rice Milk:-

1 cup hot, cooked rice (white or brown)
    4 cups hot water
    Pinch of salt (optional)
    Sweetener to taste (if desired)
    Vanilla to taste (if desired)

Put in blender (in batches if necessary). Process until creamy. Strain. Discard solids.

Store rice milk in jar in fridge. Shake before using. Keeps 3 - 4 days.
