I have never been one who enjoys going out much. I absolutely abhor the majority of bars and other places where people congregate. It seems to be the norm at most places these days that there must be at least 10 televisions showing 10 different things on top of loud and obnoxious music. There are not so many quiet places where you can sit down and enjoy a craft brew and carry on a quiet conversation these days, but those are the places I like when it comes to "going out." My favorite such place in my area is this British pub called The Old Toad. There is not a single TV in the joint, and the atmosphere is very quaint and old school Britain, and is operated by British students. Their beer selection is massive, and they always have unique beers on tap, including cask ales. On top of that, they serve a fish and chips which is the best I have ever had. Here are pictures of the place. I did not take these pictures.
normally, my bar preference is based about 40% on atmosphere and 60% on food. because i mostly like to go to bars to have a couple beers and eat some bar food. typically, i do this alone, so i actually like the wall of TVs because it gives me something to do while i eat. but, since i moved to this shitty town, all that has gone out the window. there are no bars here that have decent atmosphere or food. and, i have a friend here that is basically addicted to playing pool. so now, when i go to the bar it's the one local bar with pool tables, which is a disgusting biker bar full of illegal smoke and saggy old ladies with their vaginas hanging out.
That sure does look like a British Pub! Enjoy, because they are all closing down! Not sure why, but I love the 'homely' look of a real pub! Bars are not quite the same...
There are a lot of nice places too numerous to mention but the one must is a TV to watch the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, or Patriots. Hotwater
most of the time when i go out its to replenish supplies from one of the grocery stores i frequent. i don't really have a hang out. i like the arboritum and the libraries, but its not every day or even every week i head that direction either. about once a month the local furs go bowling, but i've never been because its late in the evening and i might not be able to get a bus back. someone would probably give me a ride but i wouldn't want to make myself a pain by counting on it. when the did a resteraunt or movie crawl, that was another matter. but the last time they did those, i was living in a house with several of them, so a ride back was kind of automatic. we used to coordinate those through the website, but now the site is inactive and everyone else coordinates everything with phones, which i once again don't have one. i don't really know anyone else locally interesting enough to hang out with. there are some places that i eat when i'm not cooking for myself at home, but i seldom go out to eat more then once a week if that. i'm really, i spend hours on the computer making things, illustrating what i like to think about, the kind of world and all, so that's really where i spend most of my time, and where i'm living now, there's just me, which is good for my being able to get a lot done in the way of making those things. hanging out for me, is one of those things like tv and exercise, that take time away from what i enjoy and prefer to be doing with my time. i would though, if i knew anyone locally who shared more of my interests, maybe go eat or just ride around with them. riding to the end of line and back on bus routes i don't ride all the time i think almost counts as hanging out i guess. that's something i do once in a while too. though i've done all of them. and i live in a town that's safe to do that. well there are a couple of trips i haven't taken yet in the last few years, and that's to some of the other towns that aren't more then half a day away. i just really don't have a favorite place. 30/40 years ago, i liked railroad stations, and you could eat at the resteraunts at airports without having to get on a plane, but all that kind of thing has changed to a lot less friendly since then. i would hang out in the engineering library at the local uni, if i thought i'd be welcome there, but after people started being harrassed because they might be terrorist, i've avoided the chance of that happening to me. and if it haddn't become so expensive to enrolle, i'd take a couple of easy courses just so i could do so. but that's also a thing that the world has changed too much for me to feel comfortable doing any more. i think those were my favorite places to hang out, you know, back just tow or three decades ago, when no one would notice or care if you did. back when 'merica was a little closer to the kind of free country it still tries to pretend to be.
Someone elses home About bars/public places: there are quite a few that I find ok (but there are more obnoxious ones) but can't honestly say i have a favourite these days. I never go alone to the bar and when i go with others I'm not that picky. Unless of course they pick the worst one.
Not a beer drinker or a pub hanger-out-er-er But my favourite place in Sydney for Diner is the Italian Forum in Leichhardt It's a square done up to look like a Mediterranean city, line with mostly Italian restaurants, best food, best wine, best chocolate there. Couldn't find a decent pic on the web of it at night when it's packed with people, but there's probably 50 restaurants, thousands of people, great atmosphere
I have an aquaintance who owns a bar. It is the hang out for a lot of my friends - i dont go out often but when I do I usually just go here. It isnt the greatest but it is 5 minutes from my house, has a nice outdoor patio area, a decent selection of craft beer, and a stage and local music a couple of times a week. In my twenties I hung out at this one little dive bar because they did a lot to support local musicians with shows 6 or sometimes 7 nights a week. I can't fool with it anymore because I always get so wasted there. Everyone does for some reason. I'm too old for that shit. I went to a bar that opened up in this tiny town near me a few weeks ago- the town is trying to go from being a little backwater town to a more artsy/hipster vibe I guess. The bar is really cool, it has a great craft beer selection, comfortable couches and chairs and antique furniture, no tvs but they do have a huge selection of board games. There was a very classic british pub in my old neighborhood, i havent been since I moved but I really liked it. There is also a very authentic dutch cafe in town that is probably one of my favorite bars/restaurants in the area although I havent been in a couple of years. My favorite bar of all time is a bar called the Fat Pelican at Carolina Beach in NC. It is a shitty beach town but an awesome little dive bar. They have a huge beer cooler so you can go in amd choose your own beer. The bartenders are really just there to open bottles and pour vino for the winos. The floor is made of old brick and it slopes up and down as you walk through, i'm not sure how old the building is. The inside area is tiny but they have a huge garden outside with lots of seating.
Its Gorra Be This one For me Wait Though I like This Place Its Well Stocked This is What a (Real ) Brit pub Looks like The Prospect in Runcorn !!
Depends on my mood. I usually go for more of an intimate gathering vibe. If I'm out, I like a place where I can actually talk to people, sans blaring music and televisions. But sometimes a cool dance place or local music can be fun, too. It really depends on your company, don't you think?
Johann Franck I sometimes go there for my very early morning coffee, or late afternoon gin&tonic. Mornings are so slow there, it's not too busy. I like to sit outside and do some people-watching, newspapers reading...or on those big leather sofas. Perfect location too, right on the main city square. It's big, lots of differently decorated sections, but it also feels cozy. The only issue I have with it - I wish it wasn't so dark there, as I prefer lots of light! Bistro upstairs
Zagreb, Jelačić square. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ban_Jela%C4%8Di%C4%87_Square It looks nice, but it's not too pricey. That's one of the reasons I like it...lots of business people with their suits and ties, yet regular people like students too.
