Critical thinking is immensely important when it comes to deciding what we put into our bodies. Simply being told that X is healthy doesn't seem to cut it for most of us and the smart cookies will actually evaluate foods and decide based on their properties which ones we will eat and in what quantities. This usually involves some knowledge of nutritional science, which most people seem to have at least some level of. Everybody knows that our bodies need certain nutrients and other things to be their healthiest and everybody knows that some things will harm us.

A common error in reasoning that seems to be epidemic in the general populace is the fallacy of composition, wherein one infers that what is true of a part of a thing is necessarily true of the whole thing. A real life example of this would be

P1 Kraft Dinner is a good source of iron and calcium
P2 Iron and calcium are healthy
    Conclusion: Kraft Dinner is healthy.

But we all know that shit is bs. Why? Because simply having one desirable component doesn't necessarily cancel out all of the negative components and justify the consumption of kraft dinner. There are plenty of much healthier ways to get iron or pretty much any nutrient. It is the whole that is to be considered, not just the parts that one finds appealing. Using the fallacy of composition to rationalize eating something terrible for oneself is lying to oneself and willful ignorance.

Share some of the silliest ones you've heard. Another pretty pervasive one is that because cocoa contains powerful antioxidants and chocolate contains cocoa, that must mean that chocolate is healthy and to be eaten. All the while ignoring things like sugar, heat damaged dairy and even hydrogenated and oxidized vegetable oils.

    Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. Some people... :p
