Just interested in how many of us actually buy products that are fairly traded, that carry the fair trade logo, that are fairly traded and made from recycled materials, that are fairly traded and organic? If you don't do any of the above, can you take a look in your kitchen and see what you could be buying that is fair trade. Start with something small, like sugar, coffee and tea and let it grow from there...
It's so hard to find things like that here, and I hate it. Being in a landlocked dead zone with no diversity is one of the reasons I'm getting out. I know it might be selfish, because I should be trying to change it and open their eyes, but I don't see it going anywhere... Anything alternative that opens in this town dies in a month, because it's all "voodoo and witchcraft." We can't even keep an acupuncturist in town. That said, we have a very small health food store a few towns over, and when we can afford to get there, we get mostly local stuff. My mom likes the fairly traded coffee, and we have a few of those teas and chocolates from time to time. A lot of our stuff like sugar and flour we get from a Mennonite store down the street. I don't know about the sugar (unrefined cane, but we don't know where it comes from), but the flour is from the local mill. Now produce is almost impossible to get locally or fairly traded. In the summer it's a no-brainer because of all the Mennonite farms around here and I also keep my own veggie garden, but in the winter anything goes. We gotta eat.
