what the hell happens if i fail a college class?

i missed my exam (slept through my alarm) today and i shot an email to the professor saying my sister called with stomach pain and had to go to the ER (actually happened a few weeks ago). He said i can only take the exam if i give him some kind of document from the ER to prove she was really there.

I am so fucked, i will definitely fail this class now. So what happens? This is just a general education class, i'm undecided anyway so its not towards my major. but would my parents get notified or anything? does it matter that im also taking the minimum amount of credits this semester?

your parents will probably find out - i dunno if they will be told, or just see your grades. hmm, maybe they won't. you'll probably have to take the class again, you might get put on academic probabtion, so if you fail more classes you get kicked out...and it might really suck too that you're only taking the minimum amount of credits.
    uh oh

You possibly drop it, or just accept the hit to your GPA. It's definitely not the end of the world.

Nevermind, you can't drop it if you're taking the minimal amount of hours. Maybe you can pwn the final and pass.

Ok, as a college student they try to treat you like an adult to the point that they are not going to contact your parents or call them or send them anything other than a request or outreach program from your school. They send you the grades, so it's up to you to get your report card. Now, concerning the class, depending on how your school does this will depend on how it affects you. I would suggest you check your school rules.

However, for the most part it will go aginst your GPA as a fail or incomplete. All you will need to do is take the class again.

If it was a couple weeks earlier you could've withdrawn and made the credits up over the next couple years.

As for the ER note...funny story:

So for this one art history class I'm taking, the professor requires us all to attend a mandatory field trip to the Met Museum in NYC and the PMA here in Philly. We had to write a paper on each visit and I chose not to go to the PMA and just wrote my paper online with no trouble.

The Met however, was "ABSOLUTELY INTEGRAL TO YOUR GRADE". Seeing as how I wrote the PMA paper so easily, and seeing as how the field trip was at 6am on a Sunday, I decided to e-mail my professor Saturday night and tell her I was in NC for the funeral of a family member.

I thought, "Alright, she won't ask for proof since its a touchy subject, I'll bang this paper out and kick back." The next day I received a follow up:

"Mark, sorry to hear about your grandfather. I will however need some form of documentation so I don't have to take points off for your absence. Also you will have to go to NYC on your own and provide a receipt with your paper."

    Fuck.

The whole week I was going over in my head how I was going to make this impossible shit happen. The proof was easy, as I e-mailed her back asking if a signed note from a parent would work and got a Yes. So I forged one of those real quick before class and gave it to her and stood there like a fool as she proceeded to offer condolences for my lost family member. For a minute I could not for the love of me, think of anything to say. I gave her a nervous "thanks" and sat down.

The paper was due last Monday. I got her her fucking receipt and never went to NYC. It pays to know people in NY and know how to use Priority Shipping.

So I'd say, take this lie as far as you can. They're professors, they don't give a shit. Scratch up a quick little note explaining your fake situation and (if you don't feel comfortable, or think they'd recognize) have someone sign it under a printed version of a parent's name.

^^ wow dude i cant believe they made it so difficult for you.

here at universities in canada, plenty of people fail at least one class during their first (and maybe second too) semester. there's usually levels of failing, one where you lose credits and one where you just get a low grade, i think. hell i got a C- in an English class first semester, and I'm a straight A (or higher) student, and no master's school or anything even noticed.

you probably don't have to worry about the parent's thing, it's up to you to tell them, really. if they pay the bill then they may be able to access grades through online systems. if your "permanent address" is ultimately home (students move around a lot), a piece of mail might show up there if you get put on academic probation.

That's a fuckin shitty way to fail a course, talk to your prof and you might get sympathy. How much was the test worth (percentage), and how high were your grades in the class before the exam?

grades were shitty before the test; the only grades have been the previous midterm and homeworks, and i did pretty bad on the first test. we've got this group project due soon and i dont know what i'm even supposed to do for that. before i missed this test, i figured if i did okay on it then i'd probably be able to scrape by with a C, maybe. without this test i've definitely failed.

They've sent home letters when I've had failing midterm grades sooooo yeah they might send something to your parents. Is it too late for you to withdraw from a class? I know that looks better than an F because it shows that your "care" about your grade, especially if you're taking the minimum amount of classes. Why are you doing so bad in the class and what is it?

if you think you can scrape by with a D and dont have to have a C or higher in the class for a prerequisite, definitely do that. if, as it sounds, you're pretty sure you can't get anything above an F, and you're not getting any aid, drop it. if you're getting aid, take the hit to your gpa, unless your aid is dependent on that too.

    That SUCKS.
How much was the exam worth? Like 30%?
The prof needs to see a doctors note, signed. Or a confirmation note that someone in your family has DIED.
Other than that, you can't really get rid of it.
If your parents are paying for your courses, they will probably be able to see your transcripts... and seeing that will show that you failed - and you won't receive the credit,

pretty much if you fail you need to take the entire course over again, pay the same price, etc.

    yeppp. Lifes a bitch.
