I just got home from Target. I'm sure they are not the only ones doing this either. I walked into the clothing area, and right smack in the middle I saw it... A HUGE shelf/rack of hippy style clothing, ranging from marley and hendrix to peace signs and woodstock concert shirts. I say this. So what if it is becoming a fad? What if someone is just turned on by the style and eventually becomes curious about the lifestyle that it represents? If all we do is bash people for wearing a woodstock concert shirt that they weren't there to see, or alive while it happened even, doesn't that go against what "hippies" believe in? Acceptance right? Peace and love... I say FLOOD the markets with products like that... I would like to hear other's opinions about this :) Especially some older hippies.

I'm sure you could find a small ma and pa retailer that sells such things too. They need to survive too.

Peeace and Love (and all that bollocks)

I'm just yanking your chain. Go to where ever the hell you like.
    As for the post itself:
I'm not quite sure the flooding of the market with hippy clothes will result in the increase of "real" hippies.
Plus, does the world need any more hippies?
Some hippies are complete ass holes.
They be normal flawed people under those clothes.

    History repeats itself.

I was very young at the tail end of the original hippie era- if you can call it that and most wore the trappings for the fashion statement and little else. Sure, they wore peace signs on their clothes and wore their hair long but my recollection of back in the day is that most just wanted to be "cool" and "in" and were snotty douchebags toward anyone who didn't fit in. Very few actually practiced peace and love- most were elitist and cliquish- they promptly shed the style at the first hint that it may be getting passe.

So the new market is being cultivated now just as it was then but don't be surprised when 99% of the people calling themselves hippie now drop the label as soon as the next big thing comes along.

same here. I couldn't believe my eyes last time I went shopping. It's everywhere

I mean, my friends always kid me, cause I just might be a hippie at heart : ) But I don't really have a hardcore hippie style (have been wearing the same stuff for probably 4 years. lol) : P This might just be a time for me to adopt more of them long skirts ...

As for he fad catching on with everybody, I just can't see it. Then again, fads are always very surprising ^^

Yeah, this is a pet peeve of mine. I live in a college town close to some affluent 'burbs. I see these college girls running around in their "hippie" clothes from Urban Outfitters, Doors and Hendrix t-shirts. I know darn well they don't listen to that stuff. Like I know they're listening to 50 Cent while wearing a Hendrix shirt... Blasphemous. ;)

before everyone decided to bring 'hippy style' back into fashion, i spent a year making my own hippy style clothes, wearing things that got me funny looks because peasant blouses and flowy skirts weren't 'cool' and then for the next school year shopping trip (my senior year) the stores were full of my clothes. i was so mad. they normalized my defiance of popular. i got funny looks and had to learn not to listen for a year while i was ridiculed, everyone else got the sexy look with no emotional growth. bunch of fucking posers.

It took me a really long time to come to terms with the hippie fad, I'm glad over all that it's fading out.
It made me angry that people paraded around with peace signs dangling from them and raggy clothes on that are made to look hand made and worn.
Mainly because that's how Ive dressed for years and its always made me unique and for a while it was run in the mill... I got so angry because people abused the peace sign I thought and didnt really understand it...

then i realized something, the peace sign would frown at me for thinking like that.
Now I don't care, now I realize I'm the real deal, I love it. I understand it, those people don't and when the fad is over I'll still be around to pick it up and buy the clothes from the fad from second hand shops.

people can wear whatever they want. i think fads are lame, though.

you are who you are no matter what you're wearing (or not wearing :)). some people really struggle with that idea. i think that's why fads like the "hippie" look become so popular because it appeals to the identity conflicts that young people have.

I'm not a hippie nor do I look like one, but I do have a great deal of respect towards the hippie culture and i guess theres a hippie inside of me (especially the peace part). I sometimes get annoyed when trendy kids wear something out of hippie fashion, but then again it calms me down knowing that they are going to drop it anyways when it goes out of style and the only true hippies are gonna be rockin the real shit.

A guy came into my job last week with a sweet looking Hendrix shirt on. I complimented him, and he said "I got it at Wal-Mart"
I threw up in my mouth and walked away...
