I always find it amazing how many people post, saying they are looking to join someone new when they post an 'idea' of what they want to do 'some day'.

There are tons of place already in existence, some of them for decades, that are open for new people. Before someone thinks to be a jackass and say, 'we just don't like yours', there are at least 4 regulars here that have places that are open to people who want to actually do more then talk, and I think you would be hard pressed to find many more commonalities amongst them other then they are in the country actually doing something as opposed to just talking about it. If by some chance, none of the ones that are here fit you, then go to IC.ORG, there are literally thousands of places across North America that are looking for people, if you can't find what you are looking for, perhaps you are looking in the wrong places.

But, this isnt meant to be a rant about the 'talkers'....

This is meant as an invitation to those who have already started.

Post a short blurb about what you have and the type of people you would accept.

    Such as...

40 acres in Northern Ontario, Canada... partially off-grid and heading more each day to total off-grid.

Anyone who is willing to work along side us is welcome.
We are a pot friendly place, and although synth-chems are frowned upon, it is acceptable as long as it isnt causing problems. Violence is frowned upon, but will be used to remove those who desire to cause problems. Race, gender, age (above 18), sexual orientation, religion, political views are irrelevant as long as you don't try to force people to agree with you (or even to see if from your point of view)

    I've also started a social group;

Communities and Tribes for this purpose.

Please note, if you are not living as part of a community or tribe right now, you will not be welcome to join the group.

    Tom,

I just had to post on this one, and comment on the phenomenon you mention. These posts are mostly the same, basically calling out for someone to help them (somehow) find a community.

Despite the incredible wealth of sites on the net about this, the books you can read, the reach.ic.org directory, the yahoo groups, aplaceforgathering.ning.com and a hundred others that have sprouted up and sometimes gone as quickly. Still, they post on places like this and ask.

It seems to me that this is exactly the kind of behavior that is very common today. The request for an authority figure to give them the right answers. Great lengths of coercion are required to produce this behavior in humans, and they happen to each of us nearly these days in a place we call school. A place where someone else has the answer, and your opinions on the answer don't matter.

So when I look at this popluation, this incredibly schooled and drugged world, I better understand how few manage to be self-determining despite the tide of humans who don't manage it. This brings to my mind that great thread a while back that had me in stitches with the guy who was "looking for community" and got all offended at something, and kept insisting that he'd work hard.

If what he wanted to do was be out there working and building community, he would be doing it. What he wanted to do was live at his parents house and play guitar and smoke pot . Sitting around playing guitar and smoking pot does sound nice, and is something I rather enjoy.

    Love and Light,

I swear people do this on purpose....

antichaos, If you would like to learn more, read my various posts on hipforums, or go to my site about it, or go to my blog about it.

That is why I spend time typing those things out.

If, after you have read those things, you are still interested, I am more then happy to talk to you about it for a short while.

RG, Look at the 'cults' that start up... Come follow me and stop your brain... and people flock to them.... they even sacrifice their lives for them...

But look at any community that says, we don't want sheep, we want individuals whom fit in with us... they sit there alone most of the time.

It really baffles me how people will literally chase after and hunt down the opportunity to be sheep and yet avoid with all their power, the chance to be themselves.

Part of the problem I realize is that those who are individuals who are willing to put in the work, generally start their own idea off.

Literally within 5 miles of where I sit right now, there are at least 10 empty bedrooms on farms that are open to having people who want to work. One of the farms has been there for 39 years. We could have a lumbermill (the mill is sitting there waiting) up and running and spitting out lumber if we had the people. We have access to well over 1000 acres of private land that have never been used as commercial or chemically pumped farms. People are loosing their jobs all over the place, worrying about where their next meal may come from.... and yet all we get are people who waste our time.

In the last month alone, I have had 5 people contact me and tell me they read everything I wrote and really wanted to come, right now, and then just disappear.

I can understand a lot of people might lose interest when they realize what the weather here is like, it isn't the warmest place in the world. However, that does nothing to explain why others doing similar things in warmer climates don't fare any better in looking for individuals who will work together.

I think at the heart of it all, it comes down to the simple fact, that no matter how much people might scream about being individuals, 99% of them want nothing more then someone to lead them by the nose through life, even if that means being led to some jugs of special koolaid...

    School teaches sheep three things:

    punctuality
    obediance
    rote, repetition

As to the rest of the conversation, you both pretty much summed it up. those willing and passionate enough are probably already doing. those that aren't are still happy living in their magical entitlement world. hopefully there are those sheep that are learning to look up. that are able to see, and chose to take the plunge. Watch out for that first step, it's a doozie...

Would you do any differently with someone who was causing problems and wouldn't leave when asked to?

oh it was ugly,i almost got decked when i pulled her off of him the first time,,lol.. thats when the stompin began..

was just a fucked up night. guy had been stayin here for a couple months and was paying as well as contributing labor here but he was a closet alcoholic.

that night he was drinkin tater vodka and trippin and got all pity me and women are all bad, blah blah. dilli told him to shut the fuck up and thats when all hell broke loose.

just another in a long string of examples of why its so hard to establish a successful community..

What amazes me about some people is that they seem to think that just because a person says they would prefer to live a life without violence that it means they can be disrespectful, obnoxious, lazy or so on, and nothing will be done about it.

It was actually because of that line of thought that I wrote the part you quoted. I didn't want someone to show up here thinking that they could be a total ass and it would be tolerated because we wouldn't use violence if it was necessary.

I also didn't want people who were considering coming here to think that if something happened that required it, we would let harm to come to those who are here in order to stick to a non-violent way.

Interesting post. (original post :)) I would love to live in a community setting, LOVE LOVE LOVE. Hubby has a different opinion though and feels he needs to work. He doesn't think he'd be happy staying at home rather than leaving and earning an income. I think he would enjoy the community aspect greatly though. How do you work around that Tom? (I have been to your site and read quite a bit and apologize if you discussed this somewhere else). I'm not even suggesting that we could go, but how would it work with your community if someone wanted to work off property? Or can that even happen with communes?

If someone wishes to have a job outside that is unrelated to the rest, thats fine, although they do have to give part of that back to the rest who are doing the share of work they will be missing out on and they will still have some work on property to do.

More so though, we encourage people to find a way to develop a passion into a moneymaking venture that they can run from here.

As for the type of people who feel they must have a 'job' (ie, boss and paycheck), as opposed to just working, they likely wouldn't enjoy it here.

I'm extremely interested in finding a place like this the only ones I've found in maryland all want about 600 a month. I've done so much in my life that it blows me away that I can't find work. I guess with 60,000 jobs being lost each month I can't blame myself to much.

I'm looking as hard as I can but these places aren't the easiest to find and most have been burned by so many bums they aren't as open as I was hoping. I know I'll find a place soon but if anyone knows a place near maryland please give me a heads up.

Auto/car maintenance : I've done engine swaps, I've replaced starters, breaks , master cylinders, transmissions, lower control arms, alternators , distributors, radiators , shocks , struts , springs and I helped a guy install all the AC components and charge the system of a car that was shipped with no AC.

Wood working /furniture : I've been doing wood working of one type or another for as long as I can remember.

Light Masonry/ patching : I'm no brick layer, but I've been jack hammering through the slabs in peoples homes to get to broken pipes for years, Then repairing the hole when the job is finished. I also fix holes in drywall.

I would love to live in a place where it seems to be fairly tolerant and easy going where I could work about 4 hrs a day to make cash and work on the commune about 4 hrs a day. Mainly because I wouldn't want to be completely broke..would like to keep up my vehicle, etc. but would also contribute earnings to the group. My husband thinks I'm a nutcase.
