I've never understood the point of lotteries. The odds are against u. Even tho one of my neighbours I knew won 45million. (She's fat - so who cares) Here's a better idea. When u catch a train, dont pay for the ticket. So you can save 10. But if u get caught, u might lose 50. ... The perfect reverse lottery ticket!
same as casinos, to get people to give you money for nothing. sometimes i feel like the odds of you actually knowing all the people you claim to is one in 14 million.
it depends on the lottery rules. sometimes they make you go to a press conference. they want to prove that someone actually wins. also it's generally good pr.
in principle in progressive jackpot lotteries, the amount you could win is so large that if you bought a ticket for every possible number combination, you would win more after taxes than you paid out. that's rare though, and there is also the danger of multiple winners taking the jackpot, thus resulting in a net loss. by this logic, you might say if (jackpot - taxes)/odds of winning per ticket >= 1, then the value of each ticket >= $1 , if it's a one dollar bet per ticket (or euros, or whatever) there was actually a lottery game in mass that had an increasing jackpot system for lesser prizes, and about every 3 months or so, the average return per ticket was $2.50 or $3 dollars per ticket sold. some folks had it figured out and were betting hundreds of thousands of dollars, and not surprisingly taking most of the prizes kind of a microcosm of what's wrong with the system. some people figure out how to game the system, have the capitol to back a venture, and make tons of money without creating any value for the rest of society... but I digress
