Does anyone remember the back to nature guru Euell Gibbons? http://youtube.com/watch?v=_XJMIu18I8Y While he was before my time, I’ve heard him referenced a number of times before (with reverence) hotwater
mr wild hickory nuts. my dad thought he was great. i think he was ok too. my dad also thought he could live forever if he could live without stress and live on apricots the way he, at the time, thought people in some magical mountain valley called hunza, located somewhere in nepal supposidly were doing at that time. well nothing wrong with eating healthy, and there's a lot positive to be said for eating local wild raw food. at the same time an exageration is an exageration, and if i remember correctly, mr wild hickory nuts died of malnutrition. i don't know if that's also a myth or if he actually didn't get enough either quantity or diversity of nourishment. the legend is, he over did trying to make a point. something many of us, myself included are often tempted to do. it is also a very real possibility that this putative cause of his demise was a rumer deliberately spread by those (wholesale meat industry perhaps?, or other similar 'chaimber of comerce' type vestid organizations) wishing to discredit the sensible things he had to say. and he did, or so tis my understanding, say quite a few. locally were i live, we also had a 'captain carrot', who was on the local tv, as a kind of sidebar to one of the local station news organizations, who was mostly about recipies with wild and locally grown domestic produce. i think he did write a couple of recipie books but i don't recall his doing an actual cooking show. though he might have during the decade(s) i was more or less homeless and remote from anything on tv. =^^= .../\...
Tim Conway did a sketch on Gibbons on the Carol Burnett show. He was chewing the legs off of tables. .
The 'back to nature' thing was popular in the 70s. Don't forget John Denver and his commercials for Post Raisin Bran. .
i wonder, too, if his supposed death from malnutrition wasn't a form of suicide after possibly having been coerced in defacto capitulating to the food corporatocracy with his wild hickory nuts endorsement of some packaged cerial, i forget which one. does anyone have an update on what actually DID happen to him? i'd be curious to know if there is any more actual knowledge out there beyond my personal speculation. =^^= .../\...
