I am a women's studies major, and in one of my classes we recently talked about the lack of equal pay for equal work. The statistics astounded me, so I thought I would pass them on to you all.

On average, a white woman makes 25 % less than a man, or $.75 per dollar.

A Hispanic woman makes $.54 per dollar that a white man makes.

A female Hispanic college graduate earns less than a white male high school graduate.

The average salary for a male firefighter is $45,697, for a female firefighter (only 2% of firefighters are female), $38,998.

The average salary for a male housekeeper is $23,561, for a female housekeeper, $14,877 - even in jobs that are typically female, males earn a significantly higher amount.

    ah, ain't the world grand?

Actually, at my job, the guys do make more than us chicks. But the guys are the manager, the assistant manager, and a keyholder. The rest of us are lowly sales associates. Though, company policy is to never give part-time people raises (which they didn't tell me when I was hired), and all the part-timers at my job are female. <sigh> not that I'm bitter or anything.

ya it sucks. At my job I actually make more than my male counterparts and I have noticed that my boss starts women out higher but at the same time he also gives women less recognition and sometimes he will ask female program aides to do the most tedious stuff that I know he would never ask a man to do.

Pathetic. I hate how men love to act like the rulers of the earth and dictate every little thing about us. And yes, sometimes I even get pissed at my hubby for trying to "come to my rescue" when I can very well handle things myself. I'm stubborn as hell and I'm not changing that anytime soon. *lol*

    Much peace.

I like that men act like that but I hate it at work well actually last month when I blew a tire my boss offered to come out and fix it before he knew I had already called someone. So I guess it benefits me in some ways. I am a bit irresponsible so it is good that guys like to rescue because I have managed to get myself in some weird situations...

i always wonder how these are calculated...

For example..2 people apply for a secretary position at Joe Blow's business at the same time..one is a man and the other is a female...so, all these stats would say that a man would get a job for 100k..a female for 75k...is that right?

Or do they just calculate male wages vs female wages across the board?

I like that there are things that my boyfriend does well that I don't... like I have no upper body strength at all, and he has a lot, so he opens stuff for me and carries things that are heavy. And there are things that I do well that he doesn't - it's a nice compromise. But that's a relationship, not the workforce. In the workforce, I expect to be paid just as much as a man, if we are doing the same work. If you hire me, that means you think I am competant. If I am competant, then pay me what you would pay every other competant person who works for you. Vagina or no vagina.

In my industry, telecommunications in Alaska, human resources policy is patterned to make sure women receive equal pay for equal work. I know the women out there are still challenged with the glass ceiling and such in the work place, but I am always sceptical in regards to statistics.

With the exception of executives the highest paid employees we have are the technicians and linemen who climb telephone poles and carry out the work that actually brings the telephone lines and internet to the customers, working in the outdoors in any weather often in temperatures 20 to 30 below zero. These jobs are physically demanding and are primarily filled by men. Men who usually have no degree, but are trained by OJT or technical school. Is this because my company only wants men to do this job? No. Is this because these jobs have traditionally been filled by men? Possibly. I really haven't seen many women express a desire to do these jobs.

In contrast the customer service department is filled by 90% women and managed by a woman, with the highest paid staff members of this department being women, many of whom have liberal arts degrees.

So if you take these facts that come from a progressive company with true attempts to give anyone, no matter their sex or ethnic background, an equal chance you can make the following statement:

Women make approximately 60% what the men do while having more than twice the education.

I am not saying that sex descrimination does not continue (male vrs. female firefighters is a great example) I just have to believe great steps have been made by companies to ensure that this doesn't happen. Sure male managers can still impede the career track of a female, but I hope the "old school" is on the way out.

These statistics are for full time employed men and women. With all factors similar (experience, education, etc) a white women will make $.75 per dollar to a white man. When you factor in race, the difference becomes greater. This figure is for the average difference in salary in all occupations between men and women of equal qualifications - sorry I know I am not explaining this too clearly- its so much easier to do in person :)

These figures do not compare technicians and customer service representitives- they are for the same job.

I totally agree with equal pay for equal work! gender should have no play in it at all.

I work in commissioned sales and the best get paid the best regardless of gender! results rule!!! btw, one of the two best is a woman.

Power to the People! (regardless of gender, race, creed, etc.)

    Namaste'

I wonder how they take into account people persuading their employer for more money. I could see men getting more money by persuading than women.

Also, no qualifications are similar. Not unless you're talking about 2 people who've never worked, never written anything(for professorships/business jobs etc) or something else.

I do think men make more money than women, i just question how they can fairly take all the factors fairly into consideration. Then again, they are strained in statistics and i'm not...
