This category of drinks has really exploded over the last few years..Now it is hard to go anywhere without seeing Monster signs..Lots and lots of things have the Monster over wrap on them. There are large blow up cans, whatever they can put it on..lots of sugar and caffeine. how unhealthy do you think these drinks are?
Seems they are more marketed for kids..wonder how it effects a growing body? Guess we will find out in about 10 years
sugary as hell and they make my bloodpressure drop after about 2 hours of drinking it. makes me dizzy as hell.. and thats interesting because they supposed to contain ginseng too... cuz when I dose ginseng extract + coffee my blood pressure does not drop. so there is something fishy going on with the drinks.
I think they are delicious. I especially like the lemonade and orange aid versions. I try not to drink them very often anymore though because they are terrible healthwise.
They are incredibly unhealthy, and they are backed by a huge marketing campaign targeting the "monsters" (ie. zombies) of the world. These drinks do far from provide real energy. They provide about a one hour sugar and caffeine rush, followed by a crash where you feel worse than you did before cracking the can open, so you need to consume more and more (to the tune of $3-4 per can) to feel normal. The stuff is pure garbage and is basically death in a can, kind of like soda is. There are plenty of real foods/superfoods one can consume that are both healthy and provide hours of real energy. Heck, if you need a quick boost of energy, drink coffee, eat some raw cacao, or pop a B12. They're healthier, cheaper, and they actually work.
I used to live on energy drinks in my early twenties when I was out drinking several times a week. They are probably the only reason i was able to get up in the morning and hold a job. But yeah, they're super horrible for you. At the time i was fooled by all the vitamins added to them, but vitamins in liquid form like that really just go straight through you without being absorbed. Even supplements should be taken with food because food helps vitamins metabolize.
Not something I would drink as they are really not healthy to drink. I know the junior hockey teams have banned them from being consumed by the kids as they are just too loaded with garbage to condone kids using them.
Those energy drinks always make me feel ill - mainly because I look at the people who consume them and they always look like death warmed up.
The whole vitamin aspect to these drinks is really just a marketing gimmick, since they contain such a small amount of said vitamins, and it's always the cheapest, most synthetic form used. It's mostly the sugar and caffeine that people get the quick energy boost from. The "vitamins" in them are mostly for show. The funny thing is, you can buy an entire bottle of good quality B12 for less than the amount of 3 or 4 cans of Red Bull.
That's pretty much my take on them too. I have actually never tried and energy drink and have no desire to.
I don't understand the "crash" everyone talks about. I've never felt it. I barely get any energy from them though. I just like the taste.
Usually when you consume something with a lot of sugar, it causes a sharp spike in blood glucose, so for maybe an hour or two you have an added boost of energy. Then after that time period, once your blood sugar drops off, it drops even lower than it was before drinking the energy drink, so you are left feeling weak, tired, and just shitty overall. That's why so many people are addicted to these energy drinks and often rely on them just to function. It's not so much because the drinks provide them energy, but because they need them just to get through the day because their blood sugar is out of whack. I am not necessarily saying this applies to everyone, but to a lot of the people who guzzle these drinks down multiple times per day, like some people I know. I used to drink energy drinks in the past, and they never gave me energy either. There was something about the flavor of Red Bull I found to be addicting. Addicting enough that I was willing to pay the ridiculous amount they charge for the toxic crap. Thankfully those days have long passed.
i've never drank more than a sip of an energy drink. doesn't appeal to me, but then again, i don't even drink coffee
On long drives, I sometimes have a Red Bull, but that's it. I've never had any of those other energy drinks. -- H. L. Menken
I don't drink coffee either. That may be why the energy drinks were so appealing to me at first. I wanted the energy I saw people get from coffee without the nasty taste of coffee. Even though I didn't see an energy boost I loved the taste. At one point I was drinking 2-3+ a day. Now I rarely drink them....maybe one or two a month. I think I must have a high tolerance to caffeine and what not, because I don't see a noticeable affect from coffee, energy drinks, or those energy shots. I can slam 2 of those 5 hour energy things and feel nothing.
