Early Elton John is great. His later material, not so great. The guy totally sold out in the 80s and 90s.

 

How did he sell out?
The style and genre he was working in simply changed a bit, he was always a pop music artist.
Plus bear in mind that in the later years I don't think Bernie Taupin was writing as much for him as the early years.
Taupin's lyrics are easily 50% of Elton Johns success.

Again, how did he "sell out"?

 

Surprisingly, for a gay guy, I am not much of a fan. Neither have I ever been a fan of Streisand.

 

Oh my god, I LOVE Elton John. Not much of a fan of his poppy 80's stuff, but Elton John is absolutely my favorite musician period.

I think the writing team of John and Taupin were brilliant. I personally think they were perhaps among the best.

Like any artist that has been around for as many decades as he has there are bound to be some music that was not up to previous songs or albums but overall the has produced great music.

Completely. It was my gay best friend in high school who introduced me to Elton John's music.

I really love Elton John. 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' is one of my favourite albums.

He's always been a bit too poppy and mainstream for me. But quite like a couple of his early songs like 'Daniel' and 'Rocket Man'.

Sold out?? What--he's supposed to be some kind of rebel or something?? Maybe the question is--what is PERFECT music? There's something for everyone in the music biz. He's had a long and successful career for some reason. better than most , actually.
