Fuck yea, just got one by Galveston. I've been dying to get one for years, and I can't afford a pedal steel, so I settled for this. But it is the shit! Anyone else play one?

That's cool, I busted out my great grandpas mandolin not to long ago. I would still like to get an old one myself, and my dream is one of those fender doubleneck 12 string pedals that Steve Howe uses. Man they are sweet!

Good luck to you, who do you listen to and admire on lap steel may I ask? Some years ago I had the grace to jam with Rusty Young of Poco and man this cat plays them all, if its got strings he can play it. Peace In Music..

Steve Howe is the reason I bought one, actually if he weren't around, I would hate guitar.

Steve Howe's Fender is a non-pedal guitar with two six-string necks. It's a fairly rare model, too. Most Fender doublenecks are 8 + 8 strings.I believe his is a Deluxe model. (He may have/play pedal steel as well.I'm talking about the old blonde Fender he's played for decades.)

I always thought that was a pedal, either it is, or he plugs it into a pedal to get his sound on some songs. Sometimes it's straight, sometimes it's shaky, always awesome though. And yea, he does have more than one, he just doesnt use them for Yes shows.

Wow dude that is SICK that you got one of those, I never could figure though, what is the difference between the lap steel and pedal steel? Obviously a pedal, but what does the pedal do? I don't play guitar heh, maybe someday but stringed instruments kinda piss me off (learning them) ...lately though I have had a desire to learn, so I might just deal with the aggrivation.
Relayer: you would hate guitar without steve howe, what about jerry? haha... I used to not be fond of guitar til I listened to soulive and hendrix a real lot, then jerry soooo much, Jerry's playing is actually what's made me want to pick up a cheap acoustic and start learning again.

The pedal is like the same thing as the pedals on a piano, like sustaining the note and they can have more than 1, i guess they make effects like wah pedals for guitar, but I never actually playde a pedal steel, not yet at least. But the lap steel just lays flat on your lap and works like a pedal steel, just mine dont have a stand, but my coffee table is just the right height for me to sit on floor and play it! But on that song Gates of Delerium, listen to the end part after the crazy jam section, and the reall high pitched noise and trippy slow part, that is the one the other poster is talking about, and the notes like reverberate and echo and shit, thats why I think he has SOME kind of pedal, because I can play most of that song, and I have to use my wah pedal to play that part. But if you hear like, And You And I, or Going for the One, I dont think he uses a pedal, at least not in GFTO. Oh wait, he does use one in AYAI, sorry!

And you should learn to play man, just whatever you do, DONT PLAY blues, rock, country, any of that shit, and only use jazz as a teacher! LOL, nah man whatever you want, but like I said if it weren't for Steve Howe I would fuckin hate guitar, but he just makes it his own instrument ya know? He is like my only inspiration, maybe a little Jerry when I'm high and jammin with some friends, but Steve is why I play nylon and slide without a doubt.

Yea I'm really getting more and more desire to play, but what I wanna play is percussive fingerstyle with some sliding.. obviously would take ages to even be remotely near good at that style, but I love how keller sounds on some shit, and this other guy tuck andres, and I am a big fan of slide too so I think it'd be a sick mix. I'm a drummer but haven't played my set in over a year, kinda sucks, but owell.. I need to get a djembe soon when I got some extra dough.

Oh and I have one friends who plays bass, but he will only play stuff like YES and GENESIS, which is my favorite aslo, but I just love to play anything with anyone I can.

I went over there last weekend on some powder, and I was jamming and I got blood all over my guitar from my hand bustin open. Coke is crazy dood.

Re what the pedals on a pedal steel guitar do...here's a short history. It started as acoustic steel guitar in Hawaii.A guitar was tuned to an open chord (unlike standard guitar tuning, when you strum an open-tuned guitar,it makes a chord, like an E chord.) and played with a piece of steel.Hawaiian music became a worldwide craze in the early 1900's,and that lasted through the 30's.In America, the acoustic steel began to be used in country music-what we now know as a dobro. It was played upright in the lap by blues players, and is what we know now as slide or bottleneck guitar.
The first electric lap steels came out in the 30's and were the first electric guitars. The guitars without pedals but with legs are just called steel guitars or console guitars,or my favorite,"the electric table." The very first pedal steels in the 40's were devised so that you could change the tuning of the guitar in between songs.(A different tuning can give a completely different sound.)
But in 1954,the technology worked well enough that a pedal could accurately change the pitch of one or more strings at the same time,*while you were playing.* This is the modern pedal steel sound. It's like holding a sustained chord, and bending up one or more notes at the same time. For instance, playing an E chord and pressing the first 2 pedals will give you an A chord. And you can hear the bend up,if you want,of 2 of the notes. It's a beautiful sound, and incredibly difficult to master one of those beasts.

I'll leave the steel guitar playing to Garcia. I'm not very good at it.

thanks bluesbilly... that's some crazy shit, now I know why garcia said he'd have to dedicate all his time to playing the thing to get really good at it. (something along those lines)

Lap top slide is a great fun instrument to play. I built my own a few years ago.
