My pops has already told me he will buy me a guitar for Christmas but I cant fuckin decide whether I want an electric or acoustic. They are both really appealing to me. So I thought I would ask you fine ppl of YH.

definitly get an acoustic. it may be easier to learn to play on an electric, but i find it much more rewarding to start on an acoustic, and also you can carry your acoustic around everywhere with ease, instead of needing an amp for your electric :D

  3. easier to learn on an electric to a certain extent, you will probably end up getting the other one eventually anyway, with the electric you have a much wider range of tones too, so you can go from heavy distortion to almost acoustic depending on what sort of amp you have....

if you don't have any electronics knowledge though.... yeah, acoustic.....

i agree, go acoustic, electrics ok but there is nothing personal about electric, you just sound like everyone else. you might as well be a drummer and just hit sticks agains a awfull drum with no character

    yeah

  6. if you know how to alter it an electric guitar can be absurdly personal, all the circuits your own.....

but again, this requires base knowledge...

    and a soldering iron...

    and I broke mine.....

I play both and 12 string, piano, mandolin, etc. and I'd have to say that both are totally different, yet the same. Kind of like trippin on ellis or shrooms.

I can play without any... but lately I'm using a relic ross compressor, a digitech whammy, TS-9, and auto pan.

As far as acoustic goes, listen to Keller Williams, Tommy Emmanuel, Monte Montgomery, Doyle Dykes, Chet Atkins, Michael Hedges, Merle Travis, Leo Kottke... They really puhsed it to the extreme.

eh...not sure if thats a good idea. If your planning on getting an acoustic, you are probably going to be getting something cheap in the first place, im guessing around 200-300$. If you get just a regular acoustic for 200$, you will be getting a regular acoustic for 200$. But if you get an electric/acoustic for 200$, then you would be paying part about 50-100 dollars for the electric part, and the rest for a very bad acoustic...i know that my friend got an electric/acoustic for his first guitar, very crappy...

and plus, you would also have to pay money for an amp, which for a good acoustic amp will cost quite a bit. If you plan on getting a crappy amp for a crappy electric/acoustic, there really is no point. Unless your father has ton's of money that he wants to spend on a decent electric/acoustic, and a decent amp, then i would advise against getting one.

i see your point, but you can get decent enough elctro acoustics which arent too expensive (i know you can get nice models with an optional jack for like 40 quid more over here) so that it can be plugged up in the event of you getting an amp in the future, or playing on someone elses amp

thats true, you dont have to get an amp right away. i just know that my friends first guitar was an electric/acoustic, and it was the shittiest thing i had ever seen [IMG]

if you can get a decent one, then go for it i suppose...

I say, like basically everyone else, that you should go acoustic. In my opinion, acoustic is more versatile overall. You'd be surprised how fun it is to play rock songs on an acoustic. :D Plus, you can obviously play folk, blues, country, etc., on an acoustic. Plus, you're not going to start out soloing and playing lead, you're going to start out strumming chords, and from my experience, it just doesn't sound good to strum open chords on an electric. So, you'd probably sound like a better player on an acoustic. Plus, acoustics are generally cheaper than electrics. I had only electrics for years; then I finally got an acoustic. Now that's basically all I play.

Now, if money is an issue, try to find a pawn shop that carries guitars. This one near me has pretty low prices, and I managed to get a pretty decent "folk-style" acoustic that would be fine for a beginner for about $90. So yeah, check out pawn shops, if you can.

Lucky for me, I don't need to worry about shopping for acoustic guitars probably ever again. :) I have a nice early '70s Epiphone acoustic from my dad, and I should be getting a vintage Gibson J-200 from my grandfather. :D

Thanks for the advice everyone...When I first decided i wanted a guitar, i was SET on gettin an electric but as I thought about it more I started leanin towards an acoustic...cuz it would be easier to learn on and I quite like the mellow sound...but i still wasnt entirely sure and now I think i am. I dont think imma bother gettin that acoustic/electric one tho...I will just wait awhile after I have learnt how to play and everythin and then get an electric if I want to.
