I am currently attempting to remove the antihistamine (chlorpheniramine maleate) from Coricidin Cold & Cough tablets so I will be left with pure dxm. I read of the process here:
    http://www.dextroverse.org/txt/cccextraction.txt
Does anyone here have any experience with this?

i've got no experience with doing this, but why would you want to? first of all, you cannot expect such processes to be 100% accurate (just because you read something online that sounds right doesnt mean it IS right) and if you're not a chemist its possible you'll mess up even the simplest of chemistry projects, just like i or anyone else on this forum may.

the antihistamine found in coricidin cough and cold is far more dangerous and lethal than the dextromethorphan, and its -possible- that whatever process you're using may leave some behind.

coricidin isn't significantly cheaper than any other DXM preparation, as far as i know. i've never heard of this extraction, but i've heard of a number of extractions to make highly concentrated DXM preparations from a number of other preparations. most notable is the so-called "agent lemon" method.

if you want to use DXM there are plenty of preparations with DXM as the only active ingredient, such as vicks 44, robitussin maximum strength cough, robitussin cough gels, a certain sucrets lozenge, i believe robitussin makes a cough lozenge with DXM as an active ingredient, and products such as dexalone. if you can't stand to take these products by themselves, you can perform extractions on THEM and run absolutely no risk of having any Chlorphenamine maleate left in the resulting product, making for a much safer end result.

i would strongly advise against using coricidin, even if you have instructions from a website whose authors claim to be able to extract "pure" DXM (which i doubt, because extracting pure DXM from a substance containing many chemicals would likely require a rather elegant process which would likely be out of the realm of possibility for the "kitchen chemist." even if the final product contains only DXM as the active ingredient, it will almost certainly NOT be pure DXM HBr powder, and the actual specific dosage will likely not be known)

I have already considered many of the good points you make here.
I should have worded my original post more appropriately. I know that I will not be left with 'pure' DXM. I was simply hoping that this process would remove most of the CPM from the CCC.
Also, I did not decide to attempt this because I felt that Coricidin was the best source of DXM, I am well aware that it is not. I had 44 capsules in my possession, so I figured I would try to do something useful with them.

I would really appreciate information from somebody who has tried this.

How did this work out for you? I'm very interested in the process myself, and would like a first hand account of what happened.

I'm wondering how you could know for sure that the chlorphenamine maleate was really gone?
