What is the most effective way to dry mushrooms in terms of maintaining Psilocybin content?

If you're talking about turning fresh mushrooms all the way into cracker-dry mushrooms, then it would be best for you to go to The Shroomery and read up on some of the grow teks. In most of the guides there should be a section on drying.

If you mean how to preserve them, click here.

air dry them in front of a fan for a day (on top of a crt monitor even) and then seal them in a chamber with dessicant.

a food dehydrator would do an even better job. otherwise the last resort would be in the oven at a low temperature.

NEVER EVER EVER put mushrooms in a hot (or even warm) oven for ANY reason. mushrooms will dry perfectly well in a dark, dry place even without constant air circulation. put them in an empty drawer on top of some newspaper or construction paper, or put them in a closet on some paper with a fan in it.......

something that you should NEVER EVER do is use heat to dry mushrooms in ANY fashion. its active components are quite sensitive to heat, and heat drying them WILL lower the potency more than necessary. no sun drying, lamp drying, oven drying, or even putting them next to a radiator. dont let them get above room temperature! if its too humid to dry them, eat them fresh, get a dehumidifier, or use a fan and dessicant.

    HEAT KILLS!

the only time heat is appropriate is VERY WARM (not hot) water for mushroom tea. never boil them to make that, either.

How come the best way to consume mushrooms of the awesome kind is to boil them up? Surely if heat kills them then this method would not work?

You would not want to "boil" your mushroom tea, that would be too hot. But Psilocybin is stable even at a warm temperature. That is why you want the tea to be a low heat and just let it sit.
