yea, u have to learn to make each limb of ur body do something different, but put it all together at the same time... but i love to play them, great stress reliever when ur really pissed off:H
u dont play drums they play you but were u talking hand drums or a drum kit? i take it those posters meant a kit since anyone can play hand drums if u just let the drum do the talking
i was talkin about rythem in general , i play drum kit and ive got some bongos, drum kit being the priority tho, yeh rythem in general , and the positive effects it has on everyday life . after a good drummin seshion ,ill have some kind of afterglow for like 2 hours , like bein on drugs. and there my safety net , if everthing else in my life fucks up , drums will always be there and at work i think of new beats in my hed and where my hands and feet have to hit in what order . ETC ETC
thats just it..kits are too technical..thinking about how to move your limbs.. when your in the woods with 200 others drummers, u dont gotta think of new beats, the beats in the air..everywhere..you only gotta touch the skin to feel it..the drum itself knows how your hands should move..& nothing exists outside the light of the fire, the heartbeat off the earth..and the voices of the many drums hours fly by in minutes....you can drum 8 hours straight without realizing 1 hours past...you play the most intricate beats..that you know dont come from you, but rather through you... the drum is a living thing, all u gotta do is listen and let it speak through you
i've drummed (kit) for 7 years and own a pearl masters ELX (2 bass drums) (it's joey jordisons signature kit from 2001). it took me about 4 months to learn a decent rock steady groove with simple fills, the first 2 weeks were hell but then body co-ordination just seemed to fit into place. grew up playing grunge and punk but developed to metal with double bass drumming (taking influences mainly from raymond herrera of fear factory) and ive recently learnt beat blasting (check necrophagist and the berzerker if you duno wot beat blasting is). also played a 8 minute piece on african drums fro gcse music which contributed towards my A* drums aren't just an instrument. drums ARE a way of life.
yea thats the same way i feel after a good jam session on the guitar, and in school im always thinkin of new riffs for my guitar, then i think of what the bass could do, and then i think of a cool drum beat, and all of a sudden i got a cool song goin in my head...too bad i can never remember how it went after i get home
I play drums! Badly! Really really badly! Actually no, I tell a lie. I'm not that bad. I would feel comfortable on stage with a kit, as long as I'm not playing something too complicated. I found it really really difficult at first because you have to sort of, get each limb to do a different thing, so it used to be my arm and leg on one side would be linked, I wouldn't hit the hi-hat unless I was hitting the bass drum. Would piss me off. Then I took up Poi. Once I'd been spinning Poi for a few weeks I sat down at a kit and suddenly all the problems I was having didn't exist any more. I was well excited. So yeah - favourite drummers include Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins), Dominic Howard (Muse), Steven Hewitt (Placebo), Jonny Quinn (Snow Patrol), Orri Páll Dýrason (Sigur Ros). Anyways - I LOVE DRUMS (despite being a guitarist in disguise!)
it becomes second nature ,i dont have to think at all about where im hitting ( unless im tryin to teach my self a new technical beat). That sounds amazing, id love to go to sumert like that and i completely agree with your last sentence. I mean beats are induced by feelings and i bet the feeling you get with 200 other drummers in a FOREST is quite an intense one.
i love drums..... any kind of drums.... kit, bongos, congas, shakers, timpani, etc.... i love them all..... they are my passion and life blood the one i love the most is the kit though..... you can get your whole body into creating something beautiful and rhythmic rather than just one part..... i play my kit everyday..... there are so many options with a kit, you can play any kind of music..... and all drums are a hell of a lot harder than they look, people don't have the proper respect for drummers that they should
there probably jus jellous cos we dont need acedemics to play. i wanna keep talkin about drums but dont know what to say. whats your favourite style and all that stuff? myns hiphop with a hint of metal . (defo no punk) double bass? i love double bass pedal ans yes i have tuning problems. anyone say anything . http://www.videodrumlessons.com/t1.htm http://www.drumsmylife.com/index.php?sid=2097ace692b95e4ed185f50ab64c820a gud gud
I play drums, I guess I can't imagine someone not being able to play. Like Soaringeagle says, the drum is a living thing. I think music lives and breathes, too - and it channels itself through you. The kit is not as technical as one might beleive. Yes, if you are trying to be Ginger Baker or Neil Peart - you will have an uphill battle getting your limbs to do what you want. Just get behind the kit, listen to what sounds the parts make - And make music. It's really easy.
If I didn't play drums, I would be banging on something for sure. I have a nice place now where I can just go all out on my kit, and it is so nice. I just want to find some musicians to jam with now that I can do basic beats with steadines and proficiency. I play on a Pearl Travel Kit, and for its size the sounds are really nice. I can always add on pieces when I want. I have a ride/crash cymbal, 3 toms, a snare drum, and a high hat. I would love to add a cow bell, a block, and some more drums and cymbals. I need a new Djembe, I just love the deep resonence of a djembe. Drumming is definately an art and not a simple thing for people who can't play other instruements. It isn't for everyone, but it's for me.
http://www.archive.org/download/2002_Rainbow_Michigan/2002_Rainbow_Michigan-Drums_Drums_Drums.mp3 http://www.welcomehome.org/tracks/wva-2005/Drumz.mp3 try those for some really decent drumming the 1st ones from dundun villiage theres some more on http://rainbowtribe.net but these are some decent drum jams we keep the drummin goin 24 hours for a couple months at a time the drums help me sleep in fact they full the air one circle speaking to another and the music from every camp blending in with the heartbeat that echoes from peak to peak initing all in 1 heartbeat
I drum on my desk when I'm in math class, and on my knees when I'm in the bus... but that's about it! :&
sounds fun.... i once tried to start a drum circle group in my school, but i was the only one that was interested..... blah, culture in bakersfield sucks
