What kind of drugs do (did) hippies use?How did they use them(If it's not Marijuana or Heroin)?Just wandering.
I may not be old, but I thought they didnt use heroin in the sixties because its a junkies drug. could be wrong tho. 'Personally I like the weed
SpaceChive, there were junkies enough during the sixties. One pretty obvious example - Jim Morrison. Of course, I don't believe that he was a big hippy, but there are also others - after the summer of love in '67 Haight-Ashbury started to get flooded with speed and smack, and people were overdosing left, right and center. Janis Joplin? Dead of heroin. As for the original question - LSD, marijuana, mescaline, psilocybin(mushrooms), speed, all sorts of pills, heroin, DMT, and the list goes on and on. Lots of drugs in the sixties, including ones that you won't find nowadays on the street...
jim morrison was not a junkie, i've heard (i may be wrong) that he died the first time he used herion.

Sure there were junkies among hippies, but heroin had a name for it, that would have been the reason, but anyhoo were both young Tamerlane so who are we to say for sure
Back in the day most of the hippies we knew considered alcohol and pharmaceuticals to be the drugs of the 'system' - to bring you down, mess you up and have you buy into the system. We preferred things that set your mind and spirit free . Weed and halucinogens, MDA (not MDMA) and some speed (but it was not like the stuff now). This was in the beginning before GI's brought back the heroin from 'Nam and (like tamerlane said) -many hippie bros and sisters became junkies before they knew how bad it was. If I were to do anything today it would be botanical.
Usually someone got a script from a doc and sold them on the street per pill or capsule although I did hear of some parties where people dumped a bunch of pills into a bowl. Things like quaaludes and seconal...sometimes diet pills which back then were still methamphetamine. And not all hippies were into that. A lot only smoked. There actually is a distinction between being a hippie and being a druggie. A lot of people who did lots of drugs were no different than people nowadays with substance abuse issues. Some were able to do it recreationally and some developed addictions.

hippies i knew did every drug they could get their hands on except alcohol--they were young and didnt know better--the hippies i know now only smoke pot and hate drugs---the drugs killed toomany of their friends--ohh yeah uppers and downers my my my generation
No one even knows if Morrison used heroin or even how he died or even if he is dead. He was found in a bathtub which is common for reviving heroin overdoses and sitch but his girlfriend pam courson said that he got in on his own. If heroin was the way he died then the only person who would know would be her but she died in 1973 from heroin I believe
ever heard of "pharm parties"? and only idiots do that, hippie or not. its pretty ignorant to assume all hippies do drugs anyway. and then again, who is anyone to say which person is a hippie and who isnt based on one thing they do or dont do? this whole thread is suggesting a stereotype.
