Im wondering what drug testing is like in the workplace now in different lines of work and in different parts of the country? How many of you work for companys that drug test, what part of the country are you from and what kind of work do you do? Also how often does your company test? Just Pre-Employment and post accident, or do they do outright random? Here where im at id say atleast 90% of jobs drug test, and atleast half of those do outright random testing, also a question for those of you who refuse to take a drug test for a job, how the hell do you manage to find a job?
I'm in Australia, I work in Aviation, and I am tested once a week. Theyre just shitty cheap in-house tests done by the company so theyre easy to tamper with so I still smoke whenever I want. But, I am a pilot and safety comes first. I dont take any drugs 2 weeks prior to a flight, so I really only smoke when Im on holidays, which I have been on for a while now. God Bless 8 weeks of doing sfa .The company makes us take the tests Mondays (for obvious reasons) but every month or so they'll suprise you with one midweek Sometimes CASA - Civil Aviation Safety Authority will do a suprise ramp check and drug test you after he has OK'd all your paperwork. Its completely random but it rarely happens. But, they use a hair test so you cant fake it! Obviously CASA or the ATSB will drug test you after an accident or even a minor incident. Even if the drugs in your system didn't lead to the incident, you can kiss your career goodbye! Thats a pretty bad thing after you spent $100,000 on training to get there, and lived out of your car for two years until you found a good paying flying job. For me, earning money and making a life for myself is more important than smoking weed. If I am ever in a situation where I have to stop weed to keep my job(I have been there a few times), I'll gladly go without it as long as I have too.
i just got my first job working at target. there was a pre-employment piss test, but it wasn't one of the crappy in-house tests. i had to go to a chemistry lab, and fill out all this paperwork. i mean, cheating one of these tests would be hard. but, after the first one, they can only test you again in a post-accident scenario. i know alot of people at my work who smoke a TON and everyone knows it, including the top store leaders, and no one really cares. as long as you do your job, it's no big deal.
Yeah, I can't believe department stores and the like require drug tests prior to employment, and sometimes randomly for the entire duration of employment. What a crok of shit! There are a few occupations that I think should require regular drug tests..... But stocking shelves?? Come the fuck on!!!! What an invasion of privacy. Id love to be left alone in a room for 10 minutes with the guy who thought that'd be a good idea!
I'm pretty shocked to hear how rampant this drug testing is in 'The Land of The Free'. In the UK no-one ever ever ever asks for a drug test unless the job is something like Kardon's, where other peoples lives are in your hands and you being messy on drugs could cause a serious accident. AFAIK bus drivers and stuff don't get tested over here though. I still find it hard to believe that they feel it's necessary to test kids working shitty part time retail jobs though. What do they hope to achieve? Some of the biggest fuckwits I've ever met in my life have never touched drugs hehe (plenty of fuckwits that have as well though). [Off topic]On a similar note there's a lot of talk of reclassification of drugs over here at the minute and members of parliament have put forward a proposal which looks at classifying drugs based on the actual harm they cause to individuals and society. It's very interesting to see alcohol in the top 5, tobacco 9th and cannabis 11th whilst lsd and ecstacy are in the bottom 6 of 20. Ketamine, at the moment at the bottom of the scale would move right up but would still be not as high as alcohol. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5230006.stm [/off topic]
Literally about 5 years ago with a different username. Haven't been there in a looong time though.....
Reverened yeah its pretty insane over here, not so long ago though i read an article that drug testing is beggining to work its way into the english workplace with like 15% of employers drug testing now, and its expected to "skyrocket" in the next 10 years, i,ll see if i can find that article for you. I just hope the english have more balls than the people over here do, and hopefully the english will simply refuse to go to work when this happens, thatll put an end to those fuckin piss test!
With 3,364,000 regular cannabis smokers out of a workfoce of around 20 million, they had better not start drug testing in Britain.
well the american workforce use to be like that, but i can tell you, lots of people quit to keep there jobs, LOTS
I work for a telephone company up here in AK. About half of the Alaska local phone companies drug test, while the other half don't. If I were to change jobs any of the other communications companies in my area would require testing. Any of the oil industry jobs as well a most tourist industry jobs also require testing. If it came down to it I would have to quit smoking to take care of my family, but so far so good. Surprisingly, after over 20 years in the same industry, I have never been tested.
free, would require testing to what extent? Just pre employment and post accident, or outright random?
Well, I work in IT (computers) in Canada.. and have never in my life every heard of anyone getting drug tested for these, or any kinds of jobs.. I've tought at colleges and universites, and have also never heard of anything like this... Here is my advice to those looking at getting into the working world... Study hard, get a "good" degree from a real Univeristy, reaserch what you want to do... and be the best at what it is your doing... Once your in demand, and they need you more than you need them, the world is a much different place...
I'm not sure. I know one of the long distance companies I will work with from time to time do out right random. This technician I know had three tests in five months. He would get the slip at 8:00AM and have to go directly to the medical office and sit until he could piss. I'm not sure about the oil jobs. It's just not something you openly discuss with just any one.
Good points and there is much truth in what you say, but the US is changing in favor of more drug testing. I've been in telecom engineering for over twenty years and like you have never been tested and until recently haven't seen widespread testing in my industry. It is fallout from the war on drugs.
