Droids were a three member French space disco project led by producer Yves Hayat which released their only album, Star Peace, in 1978, heavily influenced by the recent release of the original Star Wars film. This album, besides being possibly my favorite album of all time, is a complex arrangement of styles varying from electro disco to progressive electronic, with moment of ambient and a sort of tribal funk, before these styles were well defined and artists tended to limit themselves to a specific genre for an lp. The reason I love this so much (besides the cover, the dancing robot promotional videos, and the song titles) is because when you listen to it in it's entirety, at one moment you are dancing, the rhythm and synth melodies are pure bliss, and at another moment it becomes so intensely psychedelic that it recalls peak moments of DMT when you can do nothing but sit in awe, terrified. Anyway, this was one of the albums that set me on the path of space disco exploration and made me aware of the fact that dance music does not automatically imply simple or light listening, much of the electronic / disco coming out of France at the time was very complex and emotional, melancholic to a degree (Space Art, for example) but also deeply experimental and way ahead of it's time (Milkways, or Video Liszt). If you are unfamiliar with 'space' disco, I suggest discarding the ideas you have about disco in general and listening to this with an open mind, it is NOTHING like what disco was in America in the late seventies. The only similarity is the four-to-the-floor; beyond this, they were to different universes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSdY4M0zOhk"]Droids - Interspace/Tchoung Fou - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYFktLYzJQU"]Droids - Renaissance de L 'amour - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0A87ywH1IM"]The Droids - The Force Parts I & II - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB3cf1tuHZg"]The Droids - Be Happy Part 1 & 2 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUUPgWkto24"]DROIDS Shanti Dance PArt I & II 1978 Synthesizer Disco - YouTube
