is it legal where ever you're from. It isn't in Nebraska. I don't know why, I think it is safer than sandals, you don't have to worry about sliding off the pedal as much. Next, they are going to try to tell me that I have to where pants when I drive.
ever heard of what they don't know can't hurt them? Keep some sandals with you in the seat next to ya and slip them on if they pull you over. Peace, Shary
This is completely false. This is a sad misconception that most people have, but it is NOT illegal in any state. Go to http://www.barefooters.org and check out the info they have about driving barefoot. I drive barefoot most of the year except for winter (I have very little tolerance for cold temps).
I'll add mine here too. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO DRIVE BAREFOOT IN ANY STATE IN THE US. if a cop says so, ask for the statute.
I had a talk with some state police about this last march. They were impressed I was barefoot hiking on a trail still half covered in snow... we got talking about alot of things and they told me they knew it was legal in NY state. You can still get a ticket for unsafe operation but that's not usually used just because you're barefooted. I see these same officers all the time and they couldn't be nicer each time I see them.
I always wonder, when someone posts with an air of authority and assurance, something that is UTTERLY FALSE, why they do it, and how they come to have such confidence in knowing something when it turns out that what they think they know... is wrong. It is 100% NOT illegal, in ANY of the 50 American states, to drive barefoot. Check with the Automobile Association of America. They publish a book called the Digest of Motor Laws. I think you can buy it for like fifteen bucks. I will state one caveat, though: the copy that I read this stuff in (yes, I looked at the entry for every single state, plus the U.S. territories) was published in 1989. I admit that things could have changed since then, but I sincerely doubt that most, many, or even any states have since then passed laws to outlaw barefoot driving. There has never been any need for such laws (although Democrats love to regulate regulate regulate shit exactly such as this -- you know, "for the children"). If you come up with proof for your assertion, please be sure to let us know. -Jeffrey
Sure if you need to or want to find the right answer. But I'm neither in the UK nor want to drive barefoot.
I wonder why we are led to believe that it is, I was told by almost every person that sees me jump out of my vehicle without shoes on. Always hearing comments like "Hope the cops don't see you driving like that", or "You're not supposed to drive like that". I hear this on a daily basis, but after reading the links you have posted here I am relieved to know that I don't have to worry. Not that I would have stopped driving barefoot anyway, it's bad enough that I have to get dressed to go anywhere.Thank you everyone for the info, I really appreciate it
It seems that everybody around here (SW Ontario) believes it to be illegal too, even my driving instructor told me it was illegal. I looked it up myself, asked a couple cops.... Still very much legal. Wonder how this myth originated?
i dont know if its legal or not, and truthfully I dont really care. I do it anyway. In no way is it harming anything or myself, so if they have a problem with it...LET them fine me for something stupid. In the state of Wisconsin, where I live, there's also an old law that you can't sleep naked...what the fuck?! Some police asked me one day while I was walking down a sidewalk why I didnt have shoes on and I simply said , "I'm outsiiiide"....what are they going to do about it?!
That's a good question. I also wonder, how such things get started. I'm glad so many people have pointed out that there is no law in the USA about driving barefoot.
And the only way a cop is going to notice that you're barefoot is if you're pulled over, or if you're driving a no-door jeep. Just tell your friends that... Seriously it's not like they have x-ray vision to see into your car and check if you're wearing shoes.
What's to wonder about? People looooove to be "the authority," and tell other people about the rules they should be living under. You should go and beat the living shit out of that lying driving instructor. He has no business being in a position to teach people anything, if the shit he teaches is going to be fuckin' LIES and MISINFORMATION. -Jeffrey
Seem to be a rather aggressive person considering your handle is peacefulljeffrey I'm sure the instructor honestly thought he was teaching was true. Granted he should have looked into it himself...
I live in Washington state. Sometime last year, I asked two cops if it was illegal to drive barefoot. They said "Hmm, I really don't know. I wouldn't worry about it." So since then, I have driven barefoot all the time, and I have been going in public establishments barefoot more often too, and never once has anyone told me I couldn't. I went to an arts and crafts store a couple weeks ago, and one of the lady clerks was passing me by, and she was staring at my feet. I thought to my self, "Oh boy, here we go..." All she did was look at my feet for a while, then looked me in the eye, and smiled, and said (in a shockful voice) "You Are Brave!!" Ahhh. Love it!!!!!!!
Fangz, I actually have some documentation from the State of Washington declaring that it's perfectly acceptable to be barefoot while driving, as well as their admission from the Department of Health that there aren't any state laws prohibiting bare feet. If you're interested I could copy them and send them to you, as when I was more into going barefoot around it was invaluable to prove that I wasn't breaking any laws byt being barefoot. Living here though, I was always amazed at how little problem I've had. Only Costco has given me grief and asked me to put on shoes, but they do have a policy in their member guidelines and I couldn't convince them otherwise. If you want me to I can scan in those letters and email you a copy that you can print out. PM me if you want to get that. That goes for any of our other Washington barefooters out there...
I live in Georgia where it is legal so today when I was driving home from school I drove barefoot and it was awesome. I think I'll drive barefoot more often.
