Yesturday I tried driving a stick. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT IS SOOOOOOO MUCH EASIER SEEN THEN DONE? I didn't do too bad, uhm, after I almost broke the car. haha Any pointers? One of the biggest things I was told was always give it gas... and let off that damn clutch slowly. Damn going and stopping shit was pissing me off. The rest was cake though.
Practice, practice, practice, is all I can say. You have to get the feel for where the clutch engages. Billions of people have learnt it - so will you!!
In the u.k. virtually everything is 'stick shift' or rather 'manual' as it is more widely known. It really is simplicity its self and once you get used to it (as I'm sure you will) you will find it can be a very rewarding driving experience allowing for greater control and improved acceleration. Good luck.
I dont know really, I was a natural at it and drove fine the first time I tried, however, going in reverse in my parking lot at the time which involved going slightly uphill, did cause me some trouble and I used to make my sons mom back the car out before I would drive. But it's just a feeling, eventually you get the feeling of being a part of the machinery at work and you sort of just, slip in. Like being the new kid at school, or starting a new job. You just fall into place sooner than later
Some cars are a lot harder to learn on than others. When I first tried it was with an SUV and it was not too smooth. But then in my compact toyota it was really easy and almost felt like an automatic. It definitely takes some getting used to, all I can say is that practice will help.
i can't even drive an automatic yet and i'm gonna be like my mom and never learn to drive stick there's just no point to it i'm a girl after all
There is a point to it if you are ever in a situation where an accident or whatever happens and someone needs to go to the hospital and you are the only one able to drive and the vehicle is a manual.
watch out for those red lights and stop signs on the top of steep hills!! and dont roll back on someone lol.. iv driven a stick for 6 years it becomes second nature after a little while you dont even realize your shifting. keep practicing
Yea, that's what I keep trying to tell myself... it's not one of those things that I'm just going to be able to know how to do after a couple of hours, and if millions of people can do it, well then so can I damnit. Luckily for me it's a newer car, so it's really easy to shift and all that. What's even nicer, I can't accidentally put it in reverse. You actually have to pull up on the knob to be able to put it in reverse... which I failed miserably at trying to do. haha
Oh man, I remember the first day I went driving with my manual and this expensive BMW pulled up right behind me at a stop sign on a hill and they were right on my ass. I almost freaked out, but luckily I didn't roll back.
haha.. yea. I totally freaked out when I had to stop on a hill and get the son of a bitch going without rolling backward. I burned rubber... but I didn't roll backward. I think tomorrow I'm going for another driving lesson. Fun fun.
yeah the hills are what kills me. My clutch is going, too...so it makes it that much tougher to drive. In case you ever get a stick-just know that you WILL have to replace the clutch...no one can start driving a stick without going through at least one clutch. Mine is gone because my brother used it for so long before I had it...ugh
i just learned how to drive manual 2 years and honestly...id rather drive a stick...i feel lazy driving automatics now and everytime i drive an automatic im always looking for the clutch...
I love driving a stick-the only problem is my tranny revs A LOT higher than most (it's an old car) so I get pulled over a lot. I do not like driving a stick in traffic, though-and I face traffic every day on my way to the city-UGH
Be glad that cars have syncronized transmissions and that you dont have to double clutch it! Also bew happy it a 3 to 6 speed and not something that has 18 gears that requires a stick a switch and a button!
