Drinking age lower it, or raise it?

hey u guys, I've been having this sort of "argument" with some of my friends about the drinking age.

My view is that if you are old enough to get drafted (<--did I spell that right..w/e) into a war and die serving ur country ur old enough to hold ur liquor...

Some of my friends say that it was raised to 21 because of too many teens drinking and driving because 18 was too much of a "wild " age and that 21 (only 3 years) is much more mature. Supposedly it is safer this way.

What do u guys think?

 

I know that statistics indicated that 18 y/o's, the ability to obtain alcohol legally and cars do not mix, but I have to agree that if a person is old enough to get drafted, serve in the armed forces and die I think they should be able to drink.

 

We have legal drinking age at age of 18, but it's a huge trend that younger and younger kids are drinking alcohol. I don't think beer is drink for children. It's sad that kids loose their childness too early and start drinking alcohol at age of 12 because it's cool. It also looks stupid when 12 year old little kids try to be cool and smoke cigarrette, but still are those little kids who fear dark.

 

It should be 22 because that's when your body stops developing.

But what's legal never matters, kids will do what they wanna. :tongue:

 

Why not make the drafting age higher instead? Wouldnt that be a lot better than making it legal for teens to get drunk, probably increasing alchohol related deaths? Hell, why do we need a drafting age anyway?

 

People will drink no matter what. The drinking age in the US is purely symbolic.

 

I find that with the legal drinking age over here being 18, that plenty of older looking 16 yr olds get their hands on it....and pass it on to their 14 year old mates. I was drinking at 14 but i think maybe i should have been concentrating on my school work instead. I say leave it be in America, it's sensible i think....

Drop it to 15 - 16 like they do in Europe... raise the driving age up to 18. That way, kids have gotten the binge and purge thing out of their system before they can legally get behind the wheel.

 

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Even though that will not let any kids really have jobs.

Maybe just hang people under 18 who drive drunk?

Maybe the guilutine.

 

i dont believe in government being involved in peoples personal lives...so you all can guess what i think

 

the less alcohol the better... other drugs that are other than legal are obviously less damaging to society and personal health and relationships.

Well I was once one of those 12 year old kids you're talking about, and I don't think I will ever lose my childness. Not to say it was right of me to start partying at such an early age, but hey...I can handle myself under situations that most people my age would run from

 

And like it's been said, the "legal" drinking age is bullshit, because anyone can get ahold of alcohol if they want it. Though I may bitch about still not being able to go to bars, it should stay that way. A lot of the kids drinking can't really handle it, and would be a nuisance, at the least, in any public bar.

 

We have it at 18 here and yeah I havn't found its caused any more problems, yeah theres some people who abuse but its a small percentage. At 18 you're expected to be an adult by the expectations society has placed on you, yet in the same breath to say..... how would you put it, that you cannot have that extra freedom of choice to drink alcohol if you want to. It's insane really. I hope things change :rainbow: .

 

The only problem with the "legal" age being 21 here is that you can fight and die for your country at age 17, but you can't legally enjoy everything that your country has to offer. Or even fuckin vote for that matter....it's crazy.

And I don't know if you can enter combat at age 17, but you can join the military.

 

i think there is no age at which anyone becomes mature by simply having lived that many years. on the other hand, and i'll probably catch all sorts of flack for saying it here, wanting to impare one's own judgement is, to me at least, ITSELF a 'sign' of immaturity.

on the third hand, that second hand is no excuse for harrassing and criminalizing those who do. the only sensible reason ever to do that to anyone is to prevent them from causing actual suffering and harm.

disturbing the peace IS real harm. but not everyone who recreationaly anesthicizes themselfs does. nor does the one in any way require the other.

personaly, as long as no one is beating me over the head, running off with something i'm counting on using, or robbing me or someone else of their own fantacies, immaginings and thoughts by demanding our attention by loudly forcing their's on the rest of us, or otherwise emparialing the web of life we all depend on, i don't really see it as any of my bussiness what anyone does at any age.

i know that it doesnt matter what the legal limit is...its always going to be stretched and broken. the legal thing here is 18 and that is very resonable. i was drinking when i was 15... i have never driven drunk and i dont plan on it.
there are strict laws against driving drunk and for good reason.
i agree with zachsb the government shouldnt be involved in peoples personal lives.

 

umm im 19 and when i was 16 i would just steal beer. now i know 3 people who can buy it for me so i bought an 18 pack, walked home drunk and pissed and stole a 30 pack just for the sake of breaking the law so yea it doesnt matter, kids will get their alcohol if they really want it. not much of an issue for me.
