I wanted to get dreadlocks the natural way, so for about half a year I neglected my hair. Now all the hair is knotted together and it does not even look like dreadlocks. It is one big mess of dirty hair.

What to do to change this? Obviously I do not want to cut my hair.

    Thanks for your help.

Well, actually I did rip them to keep them seperated. But it still looks like a mess and there is definately more rippin' to do.

Actually, a good friend of mine came over today and he told me he totally digged (dug?) my hair. So maybe it is not that bad after all, although I have some work to do on my golden locks.

this is why i bailed out of the natural way, i knew i'd just end up with a gross rat nest clump on the back of me head.

I'd suggest lots of ripping and DEFINITELY palm rolling, that'll keep 'em tight and to themselves, and avoid clumping and congoing.

I do not like the palm-rolling, as some people suggested. The natural way is the way it should be for me. Otherwise it looks too 'slick'.

Since many people requested photographs I will post some soon.
