So.. im new at this dread things, and want something like: [IMG]

I don't know what those kind of dreads are called.
But anyways, my hair is about 6 inches and i have really thin hair.. Can post a picture..

on that picture i have vax in, usually it just lays down on my head... thats how thin hair ive got..
    But here's the questions.
Is it possible for me to get that kind of dreads(the first picture)?
should i let my hair grow a bit longer, or maybe i have too?
is my scalp going to be showing? i mean like really much, so its like one dread, an pink scalp then another dread^^?
What do you think about short dreads?

And to finish this off, if i get dreads, im going to let them grow.. not have them short.

    Thanks

If you hair is as thin as you claim then yah I agree, let it grow out a bit, and stay away from wax!! I started my first crop o dreads with about 6 inchs of hair, but mine is like SUPER thick, i used wax *tear* and i really wish i hadnt. I combed out my dreads to get the wax out and it was disgusting! I really wish I hadnt used wax, and you will too if you use it. Go natural bud, just go natural!

If you're backcombing, which is pretty much the only way to get super thin dreads, then you should probably wait just a bit longer so that there's more to hold on to.

And yeah, your scalp will show. After a few months it's less noticeable. It all depends on how you separate the hair to backcomb it.

yay, another convert! You're adorable, your dreads are gonna rock.

and also be aware that dreading is a long process even if you backcomb them in, it'll take months and possibly a year+ for them to knot up tight.

    Knotdirty: i don't think i have that thin hair^^
Oh, ok. Yeah, since its a process i guess im gonna have to live with it :]
And the last thing.. Thanks..? :)

    phen: Ok thanks :)
But can dreads like.. unknot themself, so i have to go to a dreader (if thats a word) and .. re-dread it^^?
God.. You gotta love my english ^^

aye they can 'unknot' themselves if you for an example use some random non-residue free shampoo to wash them, it'll make them all slippery and shit and they'll get loose and possibly become undone depending on how old they are, new dreads are usually very fragile when washing etc. another bad thing is not washing them at all, the natural oils from your scalp are not good for the knotting process either.

for them to mat and actually become dreads they gotta loosen and then re tighten naturally in their own formation

phen: so if i use a good dread shampoo, it wont happen.. or as much..
I know that some hair will begin to grow, or just unknot themself, on the side of the dread, but thats no problem.
Yeah i heard about that.. Is it true that your'e only supposed to wash em in cold water?.. and do you wash the dreads, or just the scalp?

sped: so do i go to a "dreader" and re-tighten them??

just leave em alone and they'll sort themselves out.

As for washing, cold water, ahhhhh, that would suck. Wash them as you do for normal hair. Use residue free shampoo.

The dreads in the picture look like twists to me...which aren't real dreads. Not really. They don't hold well in caucasian hair and aren't actually dreads.

I could be wrong though. Didn't take a super close look at the picture.

Nah mate, the only thing that will make them tighten up is time and nature. You will have a 3- 4 month period where theyll look pretty average, at least thats what Im having/had. Just keep them clean and everything will happen the way it should

knotdirty: Ok thx :).. but we can pretend that its dreads :]
and btw, is those possible for thin hair?
sped: Yeh, im gonna keep em so clean that you can see your face in them... or something like that..

God.. sometimes i think about killing myself..
look at my hair 2 months ago:
    http://img182.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=08115_DSC00038_122_13lo.JPG

.. It was frikkin down to my cheek.. That was 10 months of saved hair..
And 2 months ago i cut my hair.. And im back to scratch.
I want my dreads, and i want em now!
lol, is it possible to make it grow faster?

And how long should my hair be, so the dreads look good, but minimum hair?
With other words, i wanna do em as fast as possible, but still want them too look good.

I hate my position in the society (always blame it on politics and smarty stuff)-.-

    Hey there...
First of all. If you want your dreads to look a particular way, its my humble opinion, that I wouldn't dread at all... honestly, everyone's hair will do something different, your hair has more character than you think! Understand the dreading process, and that it's rather a series of neglect (not combing, not conditioning, OR USING WAX!!!) that causes them to knot and lock up... therefore, they might not turn out exactly like that cool dude's dreads. The dreading process is about letting go, and letting your hair have it's own personality really... if you want too much, for them to look *just so* you will probably end up disappointed. Just my feeling on the subject.

Appreciate dreads for what they are, and for the process, not for perfection.

But, if you do decide to dread, I would definitely let your hair grow a little more. My hair was down to my boobs before I dreaded it, and you lose a lot of length upon either letting them knot up, or backcombing... it's JUST touching my shoulders now, and that's after a month and a half...it has grown a littttle since the first day.

I would stop using wax now... I don't know how big of a deal it is, being that you dont yet have dreads, but I would try to keep your hair in the best condition you can to grow it, and prepare for dreading. If you want to dread your hair right away at its length, I would go the "neglect" route, and stop using conditioner, shampoo with dread shampoo, and stop combing it... At your length, using the neglect method, when your hair grows, I'd imagine, you'd be growing some pretty sweet locks without much fuss. Just a hypothesis :)

Your actual scalp probably won't show, unless you are literally balding...

Oh, and about your first question regarding the picture... remember that everyones hair is different, straight, curly, course, oily, etc... so there is a possibility they wont turn out like that guys at all... keep that in mind. For example, my hair is very curly naturally, so my dreads are kind of wavy, kinky, and twisty.
But, that's another factor: length. When they get longer, you'll have more weight to weigh down things like that and what not.

Just keep an open mind, let your hair grow, possibly even go natural :)

BTW, those look like dreads to me. They may have been twisted, but that doesn't mean that they aren't dreaded. I wouldn't go the twisting route though, like knotdirty said, it doesnt work well.

All you have to do, if you decide to backcomb once your hair grows a little, is section your hair off to how you want them... If you want them all about the same size, section them more uniform, and if you want some bigger and some smaller, you're going to have to section differently. I didn't really section at all. I just kind of grabbed hairs that worked well together, and started going to town. I'm not dissatisfied with it either. I'm really happy with how they turned out, because I never ever wanted uniform dreads.

But once you get them sectioned how you want, take a metal flea comb, push it through the hair so the hair is tight against the spine of the comb and make brisk, small, upward strokes towards the root, until they knot up..

One way I check to see if they are knotted up tightly and won't fall out upon wear and weather, is by pulling down on the dread with my fingers, and if it stays in tact, it's probably going to hold up. The entire backcombing process, is going to take a long time... hours. And it might even hurt. But its worth it in the end :)

Remember that it takes time too, so on your first day...they arent going to look ANYTHING like that picture. You will probably look kind of ridiculous, fuzzy, and possibly like you have been electrocuted hahaha... but they will calm down, and tighten up...and when they grow, they will always weigh down so they aren't so nuts too.

:) Ok im done rambling now.

Yes i know all that with combing, wax and so on, and that how much i even dream of it, i will never look like random cool dude on the internet, cuz he has another type of hair, colour and barber :)
and i can confess that its only on that pic i use wax.. or not just only, but not always.. i hate my hair and just wanna leave it alone, but still want it to look good; dreadlocks ^^
    And i love dreads :]
I never get my hopes up these days.. i used too get to excited about thing so , as you said, i got dissapointed.. So i try too think that they will turn out ugly, and what i should do if that happens .. always got a plan b prepared, you know^^.

Oh ****.. I want my old hair back :/.. the thing is, now i gotta save hair, and there is no nice haircuts for long hair.. you just look like your'e trapped in the 70's.
Well.. i guess i have to wait.. what else is there to do..

lol, if it is like you say with the lenght, my dreads are gonna be like 1 inch :D.. so i think i will wait

    No.. i hope im not^^
Though i has this obsession of thinking im losing hair and stuf.. i don't know if thats my imagination or it's really happening. Gotta say its a real pain in the ass..

Just gotta ask.. how does hair look kinky?^^

    post 2:

Why is doesn't it work well?.. If there is like hard to keep them nice and so, i can tell you i will put my heart down in them, so keeping the dreads nice is no problem for me.

but are you talking about these thick kind of dreads?
    like: http://www.sameagain.net/blogpics/W7DS9dread2-753.jpg
Because those are not the ones i would like.. i would like jonathan davis, munky, anders fridén style of dreads.. like if they are braided.

You know girl.. pain is no problem for me.. cuz im the king of pain! huh!
im geeky? oh yes, and im proud of it :)

thanks alot for your'e help, it was very usful.. Could you post a pic of your own dreads :>?

Btw, is it ugly with fake hair, or will it look like real?
Cuz im considering that.. But still.. It wont feel real..

And another Btw, lol.. my mother wont pay any barber to do it, so she wanna do it herself. Will it be good if she does it?^^
Or should i pay for myself instead, for a more safe solution?

    Thanks!

well i'm gonna stand up and give you a gentle poke in the ribs and tell you to stop being so negative! ;)
dont think of getting your old hair back, you got rid of it for a reason, and you'll be glad of it when you see yourself with kick ass dreads in time!
and whats this about not getting your hopes up? and thinking they will turn out ugly? nortly lutfish!
the universe works in strange ways, and may think of those thoughts as a request... lol!
    repeat after me;
'lutfish is a beautiful child of creation and will stop beating himself up right now!' ok?
trust me on this, i used to be the queen of 'i wish i hadnt, i should have.....'! gave that up and my life has been soooo much better for it!

you are a beautiful creature, think of yourself, your hair, and your not yet born dreads with love and you will soon see/feel the difference xx
as for paying someone, dont bother! you dont need expertise to knot hair!
as someone who lost her mum, i think it would be beautiful to have your mother help you ;)
