Dont use ANY wax even the smallest amount builds up and goes mouldy. Also wax stops the hairs from moving, the hairs need to move to knott themselfs. It hinders the dreading process.

Seriously listen to the no waxers!

I only use a finger top of wax to twist them....i have them now for 3 years and they are great!
But i think i understand what you mean, but its easier when u twist them to use a little..:)
But if you have any advice for me, anything is welcome :)

    Listen to fleassy!!!
Wax is not good for dreads...
I can say that cos it ruined my beloved dreads...
seriously, better go the natural way (backcombing helps!)

thanks for the replies guys. Why shouldnt i use wax, everyone says it but why is it so detremental to dreads, my take was that it helps them take shape??? Then again im a dread newb, i was only hopinh to use wax for a couple of times at the start, you dont even agree with that?

Nope it does nothing but make then look greesy.
Basically dreads ARENT twists.... twisting doesnt really do much for them either from what ive noticed other than make them LOOK a certain way, and thats all wax does.

To knott your hair needs to be able to grow and move and knott with its nattural movement. Wax basically gums att the hairs together stopping this movement, hindering the knotting. In short term it makes newb dreads LOOK tight but in the long run it just causes problems, often leading to mouldy dreads.

My advice is to cut out all the wax. Dry your hair up as much as possible (without making it unhealthy). The cleaner and cryer your hair is the better it will knott... ever noticed how bleached hair gets knotty easily? thats because its become REALLY dry, I personally use a natural handmade soap from acompany called Lush which is designed to dry out greasy hair, but my mummy is also making soap and is going to try and make me some dread soap.

    Happy dreading. xox

they look more twisted than dreadded, really, fleassy is right, no wax or product of any kind, it will be hard, and there will be times when they fall out, but if you let nature do its job, you'll have big strong healthy dreads in no time
