i wanna make a hat for my dreads. i have no idea how to knit. i'm not skilled enough at crocheting to make one. so i was wondering if anyone had a pattern for one i could sew. like recycle an old sweater or something to that effect. oh, also. i was hoping to steer clear of those ones with the "pigtail holes" in the sides. or whatever you call them. thanks

crocheting a hat isn't that difficult. if you can chain and single crochet you can make a hat and you dont need a pattern. Just chain like 10 then connect them into a circle. next do a single crochet into the first hole, go to the next hole and put 2 single crochets in that one, then a single crochet into the next hole. you just keep going around and around and just kind of wing it. once the circle you make is big enough start skipping holes every now and then to make it smaller, if this makes no sense theres lots of videos on youtube that could help you if you don't know anyone that crochets. I've never used a pattern for anything i crochet. You just gotta kind of go with the flow. as for using an old sweater to make a hat. just try winging it. I personally dont like the look of things that were made using a pattern and I think you could come up with something really unique and creative if you just make something up.

agree with goatboy. crocheting a hat really isnt that difficult if you can chain and single crochet. it just takes some experimenting with increasing (crocheting two stitches into a hole) and deacresing (skipping a stitch) and a bunch of undoing till you get it right. ive never used a pattern for crocheting.
if you want to use an old sweater, thats really easy. the best way is if you have a hat that fits you and is the right shape, you just use it as a pattern. a tam shape would be a bit more difficult, but for a beanie just cut two long semicircles and sew them together.

oh, that sounds kinda easy. i'll buy some wool yarn or something and try it. does hook size matter?

    never matters for me.

the way i make hats, i will chain five and connect them into a circle, then do two stitches in each of those five stitches for one round. then i'll do (round 2) two stitches in one, one stitch in the next. then (round 3), two stitches in one, one in each of the next two. i increase until it's big enough for the head i'm crocheting for, then when it seems big enough, i just stop increasing. i don't do decreases at all, they make my hats weird. if you want a tam, though, i think a decrease is necessary.

try to get bulky yarn and a bigger hook, it will go faster that way. And it will make it easier.
