Some people say illegal immigration should be stopped, and illegal immigrants are all law breakers. Well, when illegal immigrants come here, at that point they are breaking the law, yes. But actually then they tend to be more law abiding than the average American. Stop putting those two ideas together. Like to support one idea, you have to support the other. No you don't. And it weakens your argument. People eventually find out what you said just isn't true.

It's the same with Adolf Hitler. He was a very evil man, and we must never let someone like him rise to power again. But some people say he was evil, and he abused his dog. Actually, Hitler was very nice to his dog. He was animal lover all his life. He even helped animals when he was in power, with legislation that was groundbreaking at the time. In fact, the Nazis passed laws to protect animals. Including the Animal Protection Act of 1933, which banned force-feeding fowl, protected animals in zoos and circuses, and prohibited animal experimentation.

Yes, Hitler was evil. But he wasn't against animals or animal rights. And yes illegal immigrants are breaking the law when they first come here. But they're not all murderers and rapists. Get your facts straight if you want to have a legitimate political debate on any subject.

The right to seek asylum was incorporated into international law following the atrocities of World War II. Congress adopted key provisions of the Refugee Convention (including the international definition of a refugee) into U.S. immigration law when it passed the Refugee Act of 1980.
"A refugee is inherently a refugee even if a government hasn’t yet made that determination," says IRC senior director for asylum and legal protection Olga Byrne. "If you meet that definition and you’re fleeing danger, you should not be penalized for your manner of entry, and you should not be turned away at the border to a country where you’d face persecution."
"There’s no way to ask for a visa in advance for the purpose of seeking asylum,” says Byrne. “You just have to show up.”
Is it legal to cross the U.S. border to seek asylum?
