I feel like a lot of people out there, even myself at one point has this subtle desire to be a hippie. We can pretend we are by wearing hip clothes and using slang. Taking entheogen's to see the world through a drug induced filter, or a removal of a filter, to try and gain insight from the things around us. We constantly find ourselves being compared to hippies. For example, I was sitting in my basement, earlier I had been probably ranting on creating individuality or something and my sisters friend comes over and tell me he remembers when he went through a hippie stage. Immediate I almost felt upset for being categorized and a hippie instead of an individual. For all of these modern hippies, myself included, anyone who is free of mental restraints that don't allow acceptance, individuality, and free expression, no matter in what form. Stop referring to yourselves as hippies if you do. Be this. Your on the edge of social movement to the most amazing places in your mind. The true hippies of the 60's opened the door for us. All we have to do is walk though it. I know this might seem a little hard to do as we should have all come to realize by now that theory vs. application are two completely different things. The door, vs walking through it. It might have been temporarily closed by some events of the 80 and 90s. Or it might have stayed open the whole time, but no one has been bold enough to make a move. Move forward, we are now beyond the hippie counterculture movement because we are our own movement today. Just be this, keep the momentum movies and it'll feel like it could never stop.

Well, Whess. I have a few years on you. Here's my insight.

I call myself a Hippie because it saves words. I can give a 20 minute lecture about ego definition of self and how what we call our "self" is simply an illusion. There is no real individualism. Our personality and definition of self are simply a patchwork of things that we see and experience others doing that we like so we emulate part of that. The more pieces or more eclectic those pieces are the more "Individual" we are perceived. But in all actuality we are simply emulating pieces of people we respect.

The whole concept of a "Societal Movement" almost works against the concept of "Individualism" since you are trying to get society to move en masse.

As for getting categorized as a "Hippie" instead of an "Individual". Just be glad she didn't categorize you as an "Asshole".

As for the concept of a "Hippie Phase" . Even alot of the old school hippies were going through a "Hippie Phase" then they followed Jerry Rubin into the straight world and started driving BMWs. You could be going through a phase or you could be in it for the long haul. It doesn't really matter. If it is just a phase and you move on (no judgement here) at least you can say you had the experience and hopefully it made your life better. Hopefully you can take what you learned during that time and make whatever world you end up in a much better place.

Yes very true. Thanks for all the positive feedback. I just got the idea in my head because me and friend we're talk about how you go to a school and you see these very diverse cliques, and even after high school people are still trying to label people. He felt like this was done so that so I, or anybody, could use this label to get like a rough idea of the person he or she is. To try and simplify them. So that they are just another blank face in the crowd that I can talk to about computers, sports or drama.

What I should have said is not that it made me upset being called a hippie, but to be tossed in to this big bin of similar people so they can later have to same conversation with everyone in the hippie to gain popularity. I never want to be Whess the hippie is what I might be trying to say, I just want to be Whess.

And the social movement. I have recently been to so many different festivals shows. I have really started to see people of all these different 'genres' all at the same place. Enjoy the same thing, the moment our group of diverse individuals are creating. The clique I see being created in my head is vast, and I feel its beyond works. I love the time I was born in. I would never want to live in another age except for now. Who nows, maybe I am going through a phase, but I sure do like, and I choose to wear it on my sleave with pride.
