Ok the past few days my dog has gone into strange fits. He tenses up and breaths in and out quickly and deeply through his nose, seemingly with difficulty. His throat and nech are rock solid tense during all this. He obviously has no control over this action. He also seems scared by it, like he knows what is happening, as he runs over to me for comfort in between spasms. The first instance I saw this was when running him off leash for the first time, he was wearing a radio collar and somehow it began transmiting a shock on the lowest setting (1) and was jammed on. I quickly removed the collar and massaged his throat untill he calmed down. He seemed fine a few minutes later and carried on running around for several hors. Now the symptom is back and hes been home all day. What is wrong with my dog?
This sounds like an "inverted sneeze", where they make a snorting noise along with the rapid breathing and their body will tense, since they are having trouble breathing. This tendency may have been brought on by his radio collar, so I would stop using it until you know what is causing his seizing/sneezing. Usually, these sneezing episodes subside in a few minutes and I must say he is a lucky dog to have you calming him and staying by his side. This sneezing is actually normal, but if he has more than a few episodes over the next couple of days, I would take him to your veterinarian, just to be on the safe side.
My aunt and uncles dog had some strange fit like episodes and she was diagnosed with thyroid disease. I think a vet check up would be a good idea.
I've known several epileptic dogs. A vet consult is in order, if only to get good news. btw, dogs with seizure disorders get meds and live a high quality of life.
i dunno, my dogs both do something like that, like an inverted sneeze and they always have. i think its normal but if it only just started happening or it worries you i would see a vet.
My dog had a seizure once, it was the scariest thing ever! He fell over to his side and his tongue hung out and his eyes glazed over and his entire body started jerking. I bawled, needless to say. I thought my dog was dying! Hasn't happened since, though.
