does it work as an excuse to call ask someone if you left something at their house, even if you know you didn't (but it was a late night and a foggy-minded morning and he wasn't coherent when i left)? or is that too suspicious?

I would say it would probably work. I always find excuses to try and ring people or get their number. As for it working or not it really is up to you. There is no harm in trying.

no that's perfectly acceptable- especially if he was uncoherant before you left

it DOES reminfd me of a specific episode of Seinfeld when George purposly left a hat under a pillow to have an excuse to go back. Then Elaine had to get the hat back and return it (for running up her company's expenses) , but the lady said that it wasn't there.
