Yup. Went to the doc yesterday because I was throwing up in the morning, and she said if I just gain some weight, all my health problems will virtually disappear. (My bmi is 18) I'm underweight, which is making my cycles irregular, which is making me puke everytime I start my period because I'm getting too many hormones at once. Hmmm..........don't know how I feel about that. People been telling me my whole life to "get fatter" but I guess I never really took it to heart until a doc said it to me. Anyways, I feel pretty shitty today and just wanted to let you all know!
A BMI of 18 shouldn't be making you that ill - A BMI of 18.5 is at the low end of normal. You don't "get more hormones at your period." The amount of progesterone and estrogen is actually at a low at that time of the month. My BMI is about a 19 and I don't have those problems. I'm wondering if your doctor is really listening to you. I won't officially be a nurse until October, but in my heart I know that you really need a better answer than being told to gain weight. You need to be eating a minimum of 1500 kcals a day with a balanced ratio of fats, carbs, and proteins, of course, with a little exercise and plenty of rest, and see if that doesn't help. Your tummy troubles and irregular periods make me wonder if you have ovarian cysts or some other lady problem. If this continues on a healthy diet, ask about that possibility.
As long as you're healthy, I don't really see what your BMI would have anything to do with it. I have the same BMI and I've always been tiny but I also eat well and I'm active so I've always been pretty healthy, hormonally speaking. I agree with the poster that says it sounds like an underlying problem such as cysts. I would seek a second opinion if I were you. Eating a cheeseburger and gaining weight in an unhealthy way certainly won't fix the problem.
wow, I bet about 90% of americans wish they had that issue, myself included. Eat more. Problem solved.
Cheeseburgers are super awesome. I just picked apart that comment because I've always been underweight and I've had more people than I can count tell me that I need to eat a cheeseburger, not because cheeseburgers kick ass but because they're being mean. mmmm...i might go make a cheeseburger...
I used to often throw up when I was younger whenever I got my period. I was also 5'6 and a 100 pounds, I wonder if that had anything to do with it. My periods used to be a lot more irregular, they still kinda are. I don't throw up anymore and I'm 5'7 and my weight is around 125.
Lol, thanks guys. I think I'm gonna try and gain weight the healthy way, ya know, by NOT stuffing myself full of cheeseburgers. Lots of snacks throughout the day and actually eating meals. I've been pretty bad about skipping meals just because I'm so busy w the kids I forget to eat. And creedlespeak, they think I have PCOS bc my androgen levels are pretty low. I didn't really see the correlation between being thin and having irregular cycles, but I've heard it from multiple docs since I was a teen. I am however very skeptical of doctors, so if you have any advice, please tell! Lol. Just remember, I'm broke so a specialist is out of the question. Oh, and they put me on the pill thinking it will even everything out, which I'm less than thrilled about
I've gained maybe 10 pounds since high school and thats largely involved stuffing my face and eating completely unhealthy food. Its really ironic that to be in my supposed healthiest, ideal weight I have to eat unhealthy. Whereas when I eat healthy and keep up an active lifestyle, I'm like 15 pounds underweight. anywhoooo. It sucks they put you on the pill but that does work wonders for some people. Hopefully it will work for you temporarily until maybe you can figure out a safer, more natural alternative to the problem.
