Do you think weed makes you smarter, dumber, or no effect on intelligence?

I've heard many people talk about both sides of this. A lot of people say weed makes you lazy and stupid, while others say it expands your mind and helps you think better (as well as thinking of new creative ideas). And others say it doesn't have any effect on intelligence. What do you think?

I say it makes you dumb becuase I know people who were smart and started, now they can barely spell. I don't think it just makes you dumb though, i think you have to do it ALOT for it to take effect of that.

    No...

Weed doesn't "make" you smarter or dumber, it just opens your mind up, and it is up to you if you get smarter or dumber.
Weed made me look at everything in new ways, I started questioning things that I never questioned, and realized how messed up some things are.
The only negative of weed that I can think of (for me at least, this doesn't happen to everyone) is that I am a little slower at responding. Although I noticed this change, the answers (or whatever) that I give are WAY more intelligent, and are supported by facts.
To this day, I have never seen a person who smokes weed on a regular basis judge anyone before they know them, or say something is good or bad if they haven't done it.
It depends on the person, but everyone that I know has gotten "smarter" after using weed for at least a year, but "smarter" shouldn't be used... people just use their brain instead of saying or believing everything that people tell them.

It all varies in my life. I know someone who did it everyday all through highschool, he got straight As all through highschool and is in college right now.

But I also know some people who can barely spell there name (like my uncle, he had to think and concentrate on spelling his name). I'm not completely sure if that was caused by marijuana though becuase he also snorts coke and does heroin.

But I know someone who also only does weed and he can barely spell and I knew him awhile ago and he could spell better then then he can now.

My step-father has been smoking weed since his teens, and he is now 63; He is one of the most responsible person that I know. He worked in the sanitation for twenty-plus years, earning him his pension. Many people wouldn't see that as an achievement, but I would, especially considering all of the losers out there that can't hold a job for longer than six-months. Lazy? Absolutely not.

My step-father is older, but is sharper than ever. He is very bright, and catches on to new ideas and concepts, pretty quickly. He is incredibly modern and up-to-date for his age, and that indeed takes intelligence.

I don't think there is any correlation between intelligence and cannabis. The only reason why any correlation shows up, is simple. When you're high, your short-term memory is weakened, obviously. But afterwards, after THC is out of your system, and become sober, you're fine.

I guess this would only apply if you're stoned off your ass, 24/7.

It depends on which knowledge one places their values on. The people who value academic intelligence, but measure it systematically (For lack of a better word) might say weed as had a negative effect on my intelligence. I personally think weed has really helped develop my knowledge for the better. It turned my socially anxious, hyper-analytical mind from a flaw, to a comfortable state of mind. I thought life was pointless, and I wanted to exist no longer. I still think life is pointless, but I've learned to almost appreciate every aspect of it, including the things I hate. I've learned a lot about myself, I guess you could say. I live life for enjoyable sensory perceptions, and I've learned to chill out over the bad ones and accept them simply as "Sensations".

So, uhh... Yes. Weed has made me smarter, I think. ; )

    Edit:
And this is not to say I don't value scholarly knowledge. But in my case it's more of a personal interest.

I don't think pot has a chemical affect one way of the other. I think that it can be done is excess, and then people lose motivation and short term memory when they're high. If you spend much of your life stoned, you won't remember or think well while stones and thus seem dumber.

I also don't think pot makes you smarter or expands you mind in any real way. I think its just another experience you have, and that makes you more broad and open minded

    Cheers

I think it makes you smarter about yourself but it doesn't make you smarter when it comes to knowlege. Its true when you are high, you are stupid. But when you are sober you are back to normal. I can't even say the ABCs when I am high, I can't even remember what happened 10 seconds ago when I am high. That may be just me though.

well the first thing that i am going to point out is that what does spelling have to do with intelligence?? i have always thought that i spell decent and have decent grammer. i know people that dont smoke and cant type or spell for shit. in my opinion typing or spelling has nothing to do with intelligence. each person picks which skills and things they want to do. some people could care less about how they type or sound to other people. others make sure everything is right before someone else reads it.

now with the effects of weed on intelligence. i think that short term memory is worse only while being stoned. i have read articles about this is the only downside when under the effects of pot. from what i have read once the person is sober they are back to "normal". to sum this up i think that "normal" is different for every person. i do not believe that THC changes a persons original IQ after its effects have worn off.

Back before I started smoking, I was good at history, and bad at math. Now I'm good at history, and bad with math. Same general area of grades(A's,B's), same level of classes(honors,AP) with the same amount of effort(minimal). The only effect of smoking that I can see is that people who smoke a lot might not do as much in school, so their grades suffer.

But a friend of mine who has been smoking since he was 11 almost everyday in large quantities, had average grades, and then went and got a perfect score on the SAT. I beleive it depends on the person. If you think that weed has made you stupid, then you'll become dumber. But if you feel it doesn't really affect you then you'll be the same mentally.

I think it does a little bit of both.

I do agree with Herbal Mage in the sense that it is up to you whether you get smarter of dumber. I couldnt agree more.

However, marijuana does make you lazy, there is no denying that. But everyones different, some people dont let that stop them. But i PROMISE you, if your young & continue to smoke weed, by the time your middle aged you memory will be shot to hell.

i know older people that have smoked their whole life and their memory is just fine. from everything that i have heard the only time it effects a persons memory is when you are under the influence. when i smoke my short term memory is bad but after im sober i can remember just fine. i really dont believe that it has any long term effects on an average user.

it is an absolute fact that that ah....ahhhh......what the fuck were we talkin' about!

oh yeah, ive smoked for over 30 yrs,and the shit doesn't have any such affect. when your high, sure your overly forgetfull, cause your high, your mind is preoccupied. i've worked alot of places and have met lots of people, who have never smoked, that would lose their ass if it wasn't attached!

on the other hand when you focus that high on one particular thing, your on it!
some of the best chess games i've ever played, i was stoned!
learned to juggle stoned, love to juggle stoned.

now it can just put lead in your ass and make doing absolutly nothing, very comforatable, but thats a personal choice, not the weed!

It is the person, not the drug. I have been smoking for 3 years now and can still maintain a 3.7 GPA.

it definatly depends on the person.
some people smoke pot and just dont care about their grades or knowledge.
other people smoke pot and do care.

it really isnt the drug at all. coz if you care about that sort of stuff you will go far in it.
when your stoned you hardly care about the alphabet and maths and stuff... i know i dont.
