Yeah, I see where you're coming from. But I think a lot of folks fear the homeless cuz they're afraid it could happen to them. So it becomes a denial thing. They don't want to have to take a long look at the problem. Which doesn't make it right. Cuz that only makes homeless people feel even more isolated and alone. Thanks for your excellent comment.

    Peace,

    PD

i only give money to beggers who a) show some effort, b) i see them allll the time or c) has talked to me and seemed like a nice enough person.

homeless people dont have a job. they dont do anything. so why help out the ones who continue to do nothing, instead of the ones who are trying? i love to see homeless people playing instruments, especially when theyre good, and like to give them money.

but if the govt spent all its money on homeless, then what would the incientive be to have a home, if your taken care of without a home?

liberalism has an extent to where its productive.

if a homeless person is sittin swearing at people ill ignore them or make fun of them.

if theyre sitting there with a sign for food and stuff every day, ill give em wahtever food i dont feel i need, like a box of biscuits or my fries. thats only if i really dont need the food and if theyre pulling my heartstrings too much

but yeh i thinkbums that sit around and do nothing dont deserve to be given change, but the bums who want to spend their time talking or entertaining people, they put in effort and make something out of their predicament, however small it is.

if a bum is threatening ill keep away from them but if im in a group im not that scared. if a bum made any sort of attack on a freind or anyone really, i wouldnt run off, bums would be the easiest people to fight haha, i mean they might have some fight-wit but theyd be weak as shit

oh yer and i think a good incentive would be to mass produce a special type of soup/gruel that is nothing special, but contains the necessary vitimins and minerals and carbohydrates and oils that bums dont normally get,
like make a powder that can be bought cheap and in bulk, like the ingredients of gruel or soup kitchen soup would be. soup kitchens would get this stuff, mix with water, and serve modest servings to bums who would get all the nutrition they need, not just like whatewver cheap carbs are in the stuff they normally get.

or even sell it like 5 cents a serving or soemthing, so the bums who sit in an alley and do nothing dont get as much as the bums who make some sort of effort.

there cant be this uberliberalism towards homeless people.

of course those with mental disabilities dont apply that much with all this

So what about the ones that are totally mentally ill, and can't even think straight most of the time. Should we just let them starve and freeze? I mean, cuz they can't "work" for a living like most of us do? You know, we're all gonna get old and sick one day. Some of us sooner than others. So if we can't be compassionate towards disabled folks now while we our healthy, then what right will we have to ask for compassion when our time comes? That's what I try and think about most. You've raised some good points.

    Peace,

    PD

Actually (in America) there is no uberliberalism towards the homeless. Or even for the poor that are housed. Dubya has made it very clear that offering help to the poor and homeless is the least of his concerns. And he has helped to cut medical and social services accordingly. He's taking money away from them, so that he can continue to line the pockets of the wealthy. Big time. So I have much more compassion for the homeless now. Because even though many of them once paid taxes and everything, now that they are down and out...... the government could not care less about them. And I think that totally sucks.

A lot of homeless work too, especially in the States. I mean, not all and probably not even the majority, but a fair chunk. I've heard several stories of single parents working, even working 30+ hours a week and they can't get an apartment because they have to take care of their kid. They live out of a car or a shelter, and maybe if they can afford it they go to a motel for a night, because it's actually resembling clean. I couldn't even imagine living like that. I don't think I would be able to survive like that, I'm not strong enough.

If we're talking about a homeless person who is simply a person without a home, to me that conjures a different image from the one of a mentally ill person rambling around talking to people who aren't there. Those are the ones who get shunned. Not the normal, mentally healthy ones who have simply fallen on hard times.

And of those, I don't suspect that many remain homeless for the long term. Any reasonably intelligent, reasonably mentally healthy person who finds himself homeless will almost immediately set about either helping himself or finding some person, relative, or agency that can help him. Right? I mean, think of YOU yourself. Bang -- tomorrow, you're homeless. Do you just wallow around in it, and stand on a corner begging? No. You go trying to find a job, or calling a relative or friend and explaining your plight, or you go to some social services office and find out what they can do for you.

That's why I figure most people who remain homeless are either ill, or just choose to be homeless. I did see something either on t.v. or in a newspaper that there are some people who steadfastly remain homeless even though they'd be able to not be.

    Guess you've never been there/walked a mile in a 'homeless' person's shoes.

    Talk is cheap...
