i'm a white girl with brown hair but i dye it red and its really curly and big. if you wish you can go to my profile to see what it looks like. i was wondering if dreads are hard to manage and if they hurt and if you can dye them?? I've been interested in getting them for some time now but i don't know how it will affect my life (i wanna be a theatrical makeup artist when im older) and if ill like them..cause if i dont ill have to chop my hair off... !!!

also, does it make your hair big to have dreads or condense it? cause i love big hair..

thanks for any help in advance :)

only when they are big at fat and long and your neck snaps

yes its just harder or some shit
    more dye

don't know what your saying here so
but dreads can be pretty huge depending on how long you have them

You obviously don't know this forum very well :D

Flower, if you check the FAQ (in the READ THIS thread) that will answer most of your questions. Enjoy covered it all anyway. "How it will affect my life".... Urh it won't. The job you're after won't need your dreads to be chopped off. The only life changing thing is that you'll learn to be patient and tht you stop using a hair brush. Simples.

Again, check the FAQ thread for info about dyeing.

wow I think your hair is fab as it is but dreads would take it to the next level. I love red dreads they look so earthy and lush. I could imagine you having big thick natural dreads. I saw this chick on the train yesterday who had about 12 dreads in her whole head.
They looked gorgeous. I dye mine blonde and it's easy enough. A bit of a pain in the ass and you have to rinse out the dye for agesss but it's worth it. PM me if you have anymore questions.x

They are as hard to manage as you want them to be. You have a hair type (curly) that would probably lock up very well on their own with no forcing or maintenance. They can hurt if the sections become webbed together, or if they become heavy. You can dye and bleach them.

They will affect your life however you let them. If you don't make a big deal about them, probably no one else will either. Besides if you go into makeup, the hairstyle will probably be pretty accepted in the theatrical community

removing locks does not require cutting your hair

I felt like it made my hair a bit bigger. But, it may have a lot to do with hair type and method of locking. For you, you may see a reduction in volume. Who knows, that's the fun part about locks. You can let them do their own thing and watch how they change.

Also, I really recommend ready the Sticky called "Read this or risk getting flamed" it contains an FAQ with many of the the questions that you asked.

no i wouldn't recommend dreadlocks to anyone. they're a pain in the ass, they take forever to dry. they look ugly, they pull at your scalp and cause pain, they grow mold on the inside, they stink, they prevent you from getting jobs, they smell like weed smoke, it's hard to put on a t-shirt, and also they itch. a lot.

lol thaks everyone this was really helpful. so one more question- does your hair keep growing at a normal rate in dreads?? and is it really hard on your head to have them long? i dont really want them that thick, i may have a couple thick ones but mostly thin long ones and the top of my hair is shorter soo yeah

Depends on your hair. The "Rules" in place might be better used for your hair type, although I'm not one to discourage locks. Go for it.

    but.
I allow my locks to do whatever they need to do. I might rip some, maybe, but I WANT thick dreads, not skinny things. My hair is super strong and unlike many I know with dreads, I haven't lost a single one yet. I have new dreads growing on top of my head now. They are babies. Hm. also my hair is only heavy when it gets soaked. Usually it's very light. Maybe once they get longer they might be heavier. As for removing them, I don't plan on it, but I sure ain't gonna be sitting here for days on end trying to soak and remove them. It's hard enough when you have microbraids or whatnot to remove, let alone dreadlocks.

I know nothing about white folk hair, so I may only be referring to my hair type with my response.

it doesnt grow any slower but be aware your hair will shrink up as it dreads and knots so it may not look like its growing at all for a good 6 months or so but that depends on your hair
