I was a vegetarian for about five years... have to admit that each March I would crave cabbage and corned beef. Do you have any cravings to speak of during your vegetarian lifestyle ?
I crave a good piece of salmon sometimes, and I am always craving cheese. As far as red meat and poultry go... never. I've never been much of a meat person anyway, and when I happen to crave it, there are some awesome alternatives.
I craved all sorts of foods during my first year as a veggie until I found substitutes & learned what I was REALLY craving. (I thought I was craving hamburger when really it was the ketchup I wanted) Now the only food I crave is bacon. Especially when tomatoes are in-season, I want a fresh BLT sooo bad! But I'm deathly allergic to all pork, so it wouldn't matter if I wanted to "cheat" anyway, I still can't have it! I've been gluten-free since November 1st, and I'm having a much tougher time with some of the cravings with this than I did with going vegetarian. I want a pizza crust that doesn't crumble when you look at it... and I'm DYING for a piece of garlic bread or a breadstick! But I figure it's the same idea as before, and I just need to dig deeper for substitutes. love, mom
You know, I don't. I remember when we first went veg years ago (well, at that time we actually ate fish, but only very very rarely) I would crave fast food sometimes. But in the months before that change, we were eating at Wendy's, Del Taco, etc. ALL the time. Like, several times a week. It was actually most of what pushed us over the edge, when we stepped back for a moment and realized what we were consuming. It was the convenience I was craving as much as anything, and eventually I got over it. Since I officially stopped eating dairy, eggs, and fish a couple months ago, I really haven't had any problems with cravings. I wouldn't be surprised if they came later, around the 1 year mark, but at the moment I'm so distracted by all the delicious foods I taste now that they aren't smothered in cheese, not to mention feeling really good for the first time in years... I just don't have the extra attention cravings require!
hm... i've heard that some fast food chains, namely the one with the clown, use MSG in their meat? can anyone confirm this? or deny it? I actually went veg at first because I ate some of the cheap burgers, and the last two times I ate it, my stomach had big problems and I had to miss my classes. I started doing research and found out about vegetarianism.
Not sure about the msg, and I haven't eaten ANYTHING from the evil clown in 10+ years. After I stopped meat I stopped almost all fast food (ate at Taco Bell occasionally until I went vegan), I wouldn't even eat a "veggie burger" from a fast food chain if you paid me!
Salami makes my mouth water, even after about 12 years of being a vegetarian - but like toothfairy said, its just the spices I crave. Imitation salami/meats have worked just fine.
Toothfairy- you can get immitation sausage that is literally 10x better than the bloody stuff of old. You can pick it up at certain specialty stores such as Whole foods- each link has 26g. of pure wheat and grain protein (which is insanely healthy and energizing) The brand is called Field Roast- I would HIGHLY recommend the Mexican Chipotle. By the way--- if you have some time on your hands try this: Get the packet of the immitation sausage and put it in a skillet with some olive oil and some fennel seeds, let that cook till brown for about 8 minutes on high- then lower the temp. to a simmer and add some tomato sauce (if you want just get the store bought stuff which is always very good) Then let that cook for anoth 5 minutes on simmer and get a nice bread to put it on. I have experimented with this sandwich in many ways, many times- and it has truly come to be the best sausage sandwich I've ever tasted. Please try it if you can!
I've been a vegetarian for a little over eight years and found out I was lactose intolerant just a few months ago, so I decided to just be vegan and get it over with... I crave macaroni and cheese and ice cream a great deal sometimes...and the imitations just don't measure up sometimes...
Gratefulvegan, I appreciate your tips, but I'm in Australia and there isn't that big of a selection of imitation products (especially in my area) We don't seem to have any of the products that are available in the US. One of these days I'm going to make the treck down to Brisbane and check out some of the asian supermarkets, I hear they stock some weird and wonderful products. Your sandwich sounds delicious though.
My mom's homemade meatballs!! Last time she made them I was like ohhhh mann and the veggie meatballs suck! But she said if I got some veggie ground beef she would make some meatballs. =)
Actually, I really don't miss anything. Well, turkey for social reasons (Thanksgiving), but other than that every time I try to imagine myself eating meat it makes me sick because now that I know exactly where it came from it's disgusting! I can just see my teeth breaking through flesh and it freaks me out...
I've been a vegetarian for about 18 months, and I went through a phase of craving meat in general--especially chicken. That was weird. It was just after I had mono, though, and I'm pretty sure it was my body trying to tell me I was lacking in something. I don't crave any meat now--none.
The only thing I miss is not having to think about food so much. It would be nice to be able to go to a potluck or any other social event that involves food and not have to wonder what is in everything and just be able to dive in. I don't even go to our employee lunches any more because there is nothing for me to eat.
