c, d, and e. and haven't we all if we live long enough?

the only you can prevent or choose what to do for, is yourself.

however much some of the stupid things people do may hurt everyone.

it would be a wonderful fantasy if we could each prevent everyone from causing harm.

the moral responsibility, because it is what all of us can do, is to avoid causing harm ourselves.

the only thing I never let people get away with is hurting someone's feelings. Like, if I'm in line behind some asshole who is needlessly berating the cashier ill probably tell him he's being an asshole.

as far as seeing someone steal, I just wouldn't hang out with them anymore. Same goes for people who throw around racial slurs.

tell them not to do it and that I'm serious .. if they don't understand that I might have to punch them in the face if they're that stupid that they can't get it.

Well, technically you asked...do you get let people get away with things?...and then you gave racism and theft as examples.....I don't let people get away with much at all, if I can help it.....LOL

Of course, I have heard people being racist...and if they are not people in my circle.....but on a forum or on tv...I cannot do much, but make a mental note of it.....
No, I have not witnessed theft.....

I knew someone once who told me he just broke into a convenient store the night before, as he was desparate for beer and cigarettes...I gradually kicked his ass to the curb after that, as I I did not want to know anyone like that....and he moved to Texas....thank god....this was quite a few years ago.

Ive told someone to stop, when fighting
Ive told a dad not to shout and drag his hysterical child..once he has proved it was his child
Ive never come across any racist jibes..truth. but I wouldn't allow it..
I once took a lot of abuse...but I wont now...

But I do think this world has gone mad in that you cant say boo to a goose any more. religion, skin colour, ageist, there was a time when name calling was a childish thing, now you can be prosecuted for it...

But they get off on it and laugh amongst themselves. Now I'm not paying a red cent for a book with pick-up lines. I guess I;ll just have to rape that other old lady.

the idea that you can prevent anyone from doing anything, even by beating them over the head, is bull shit. i mean sure, you terrorize someone they may try to cool it in your presence, or more likely just avoid you entirely.
but that doesn't actually stop anyone from doing anything. it only makes them cautious to avoid your seeing them do it. it that. they may just as likely take it as a challenge to their ego and do so anyway.
and then what have you got? someone to spar with if that's what you want.
on the other paw, if enough people set a better example for them, they're more likely to realize they're being idiots.

It all depends on who the person is. With some I know, I will often let things go for various reasons.

For instance I have friend who is ill with Hepatitis. It makes her somewhat cranky, and I've learned not to argue but accept that a certain degree of toleration is in order, even when what they're saying is pure BS.

I have another friend who I've pulled up so many times for either homophobic or even racist remarks, that it's become a kind of game where he'll push it just to see how far I can go with my policy of not taking the bait.

Nor vague to me. An Aussie responds on the you tube about Styx, the band of future mayhem in Nashville.

As to the idea of "letting them get away with it", I fail to see how I am elected to be someone's nanny or conscience. Sounds like the very sort of thing the US is lamented for when they call it the "World Police". I see people acting out their racism often as I travel about the planet. I'm not about to get involved as it's likely as not I'd be inviting an assault. As to stealing, my favorite line is "don't even think you're dragging me into this, put it back" and when they do, I leave the store or whatever venue. But only if they are someone I am associated with. If I see a thief walk out of a store with something I might tell the store if I can stay out of it otherwise.

I see the issue of racism dredged up quite a bit lately. Most of the time the message has a polarized focus. The perceived oppressor is always the same and making racist statements about them is basically open season. As long as the people who bitch about racism continue to use racism, and justify it for purely racist reasons, we'll just keep having racism. It's pretty simple really. That's why so many racists, are also dumbasses!

If I witnessed someone steal from a large Company, such as Walmart, Macy's, etc., I would never bat an eyelash. If I saw them steal from a friend, a small business, or other worthy cause, I might call them out on it, but wouldn't tell anyone else. Generally, I don't rat on anyone else for anything short of violent crime. It's their decision, and if it really bothers me that much, I won't associate with that person anymore.

    Yeah.

Morality does not always follow the law, and is highly dependent upon context.
