Do shrooms act on serotonin like ecstasy does?

only if youre a bitch. And yes, psilocybin is actually a serotonin analogue, and is known to exhaust your serotonin, although I always feel alright the next day. But I always make sure I dont have to do anything the next day, because Im usually tired.

I usually feel great the next day after taking mushrooms.

Feeling like shit the day after ecstasy has little to do with seratonin. You feel shitty because ecstacy basically fries your brain in a pool of dopamine, which feels great while its happening but once the drug is gone your dopamine is depleted and your nervous system probably desensitized to it. Lack of dopamine = feel like shit.

What I'm confused about is if mushrooms are a seratonin analogue then how can they also deplete seratonin? i wouldn't think it would make much sense for the brain to detect what it thinks is seratonin and then release more seratonin?

yah, it releases more serotonin while the drug is in your brain, once its gone the receptors are exhausted, meaning the serotonin levels in your brain drop temporarily. Fortunately, the brain tends to be able to make it up fast, and there is a short 'depressed' period afterwards (I usually dont even notice).

Some people, myself included, tend to get headaches after large doses of 'shrooms.
    So, so worth it though.

    Ok, confused people.

Psilocin works by acting like serotonin. It does not release more serotonin. It is classified as a 5-ht agonist.

Agonist: An agonist is a term used to describe a type of ligand or drug that binds and alters the activity of a receptor.

It does not release more serotonin. If anything, it could cause down-regulation of the 5-ht receptor sites, which re-regulate fairly fast.

MDMA releases both dopamine and serotonin. Lack of serotonin will make you feel like shit too, just not like dopamine shortage. Dopamine shortage makes you moody and feel like your sick. Serotonin shortage will cause lack of sleep/ over sleep and mood swings.

Psilocin has no significant effect on dopamine receptors.

So, the answer to your question is no. You should feel fine the next day. Maybe tired or slightly depressed (rare, cause by down-regulation).

Okay thanks a lot everyone. I just have a couple more questions.

Which psychedelic gives you the easiest hangover out of shrooms, acid, and ex? My guess is shrooms is the easiest, than mdma second and acid at the worst. Am I right?

After tripping on these drugs, does your dopamine and serotonin get back to exactly how it was before you ever tripped and if so after how long?

Is acid and ecstasy 5htp agonists also?

    your welcome!

alright lets see if i can help ya out here. these are my experiences:

acid: leaves you with a feeling of enlightened and stuff which i love lol.
booms: leave with kind of a stupid feeling for a day, then everythings normal
rolls: idk ive only eaten clean rolls so i was like amazing the day after! i was great. ive heard the more you roll the greater chances are youll start havin e hangovers..

i dont know shit on the 5htp bull but i think people take it cuz it like replenishes serotonin or something..

5-HTP is the precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is 5-HT. The receptors are named after the chemical. They are called 5-HT receptors. There are many different type of 5-HT receptors though.

LSD is a dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline type receptor (epinephrine, norepinephrine, etc.) agonist. This means it alters the activity of dopamine as well (unlike shrooms).

LSD affects a large number of the G protein coupled receptors, including all dopamine receptor subtypes, and all adrenoreceptor subtypes, as well as many others. LSD binds to most serotonin receptor subtypes except for 5-HT3 and 5-HT4. However, most of these receptors are affected at too low affinity to be sufficiently activated by the brain concentration of approximately 10–20 nM.[22] Recreational doses of LSD can affect 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, 5-HT5A, 5-HT5B, and 5-HT6 receptors. The psychedelic effects of LSD are attributed to its strong partial agonist effects at 5-HT2A receptors as specific 5-HT2A agonists

MDMA is not an agonist. MDMA is considered a re-uptake inhibitor. It also stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine. So all MDMA does is 'flood' your brain with serotonin and dopamine. Learning how receptors work would help to understand this one.

Vitro would suggest that MDMA would have the worst down-regulation of receptor sites.

MY personal experience is pretty much everything I have read about it too. I had no ill effects after using mushrooms at all. Maybe a little headspace at most the next day.

Acid didn't cause much either. Just lack of sleep and no eating will cause the same ill effects LSD caused me.

MDMA on the other had can cause MAJOR hangover effects. I usually use molly (crystal MDMA) so I know that the effects I state are from MDMA alone. One time the next day, I felt more like shit than comedowns from meth. It didn't make me grouchy though. Just depressed for a day or two. This is usually caused by large doses though. Especially repeated doses. When me and my wife take it for connections and not to roll around town, its usually about 100mg for each. I don't notice much effects but noticable headspace the next day from a dose like that.

If you continuously trip on MDMA it can destroy the receptors. Not eating/sleeping makes it worse. Good thing is, destroyed receptors DO come back after a while, some estimate 6 months, others greater than a year. BUT they come back in a different part of the brain, causing not damage but alterations to the brain. Usually in or near the hippocampus. This does NOT mean however they will always come back in the same amounts! (One study I read did this to moneys. Only to find out 1 year later that the neurotoxic dosed monkeys had more 5-HT receptors than the control group (in different parts of the brain), weird huh?)

LSD and mushrooms don't destroy the receptors themselves. They can permanently cause changes though. Most of the changes can be reversed with healthy lifestyles though after a year or more. Though not all of it will go back to normal (some say this is the reason for flashbacks and HPPD).

I would go into more detail, but sometimes I bore people with to much info. You got the jist though, right?

AND for the love of god, when I don't try I can find all sorts of visuals on how neurotranmitters work. But right now I can't find a single thing... ><
