Well here it is guys, I love my dreads, they are a part of me and my being.

I today was offered, if I cut my hair clean cut, that my hourly rate would double, in paper.

As you would guess this would totally change my life, but at the same time for what price.

That's a hard call. How much do your dreads mean to you? I think it's only something you can figure out. Good Luck

would you still be doing the same job? if so, i dont think they can say that, its discrimination surely. it would be like paying a man twice as much as a woman for the same job.
its a tough one and i dont envy you being put in that position xx

:) Wow. Attachment really IS suffering, you know?

Look at your options. Is there is room for advancement in that job you should cut 'em. If it's a dead end, get another job that doesn't discriminate.

It's tough. I know that I'll have to cut my locks to get a job after I get my PhD...I doubt any hospital will hire a dreadhead. It'll be symbolic though...of a new phase and new journey in my life. Just be sure that the job is worth it.

Don't sell out. Do follow the phases and chapters of your life. Does that make sense? The loss of your dreads should mark a place in your life and MEAN something.

Ask your boss How your dreads constatute you pay to be what it is. Basing you pay on your lifestyle/hairstyle is illegal, as it is prejudice agaist a minority.

I personally would never do it, as long as it isnt about having enough money to eat and live. How i wear my hair certainly doesnt affect the quality of my work and cutting would just be fake breathing for the real problem that is - people's prejudices. I suppose you could do a list.. what would be the benefits? Would it be worth cutting apart a part of, as you say, yourself and your being?

You should take that paper with the offer to a lawyer, sue your boss for discrimination, and make more money from that than you would have at your job.

    I agree with this exactly.
This is unnecessary, and truly selling your soul. Don't litigate, coaborate.

Besides, how much are we saying here? $6 - $12? no. $10-$20? Maybe.
$25-$50? Probably! $50-$100 Why are you asking?

I disagree, why do you want to back down into submission? Unless you put the perpetrator of DISCRIMINATION in their place, they will walk all over you, if you litigate, your showing them that you DO have a backbone, it's the only honorable option. The boss is trying to BLACKMAIL the employee into changing an integral part of who they are for money. The ONLY logical way to fight for your freedoms within our continually oppressive society is to hit them where it hurts, in the wallet.

Maybe He/She is just BSing you. A test to so if you'll go through with it. Then when your all hyped up and ready to do it they'll say nevermind.
Also if you do go through with it since its under the table they can just stop paying and you wouldn't have any way of proving that they have to pay. (just a thought...possibility)
PRO: With the extra money plus the money you save not buying hair products you would be making quite a bundle of cash.( Im more then sure i spelled quite wrong)

I'll work in a hospital too, and i'll NOT cut my dreads just because of that, i've already been out on practise and they don't even seem to notice. :) I see doctor students at my school with dreadlocks as well.

its not under the table everything is on the books.
And the thing is im kind of stalled now in my position, no real room for advancemnet
but after the haircut, the posibilties really really really open up.

At the sametime as people said why get beaten down?

Well thatis what my boss does he beats you down until your in the ground, its just his game, and you have to constnatly make sure that doesnt happen. Pretty lame I know.

So far they stay but every day the carrot he dangles gets larger and larger.........

I wouldn't do it.........NO WAY.....my locks are a part of me and no amount of $$ in the world would make me cut them off. Of course I guess it all depends on how you look at it, if you let it lock up because of a point or phase in your life and you knew someday you would get rid of them anyway, I can see how you might "take the money and cut" however for me personally I would fight the discrimination tooth and nail, litigation, contacting law makers, going above my boss's head, whatever it takes, but that is because *I* personally let my hair lock up with the sole intention of never cutting them again, so it's as much a part of me as my arm or my leg.....I wouldn't cut my limbs off for money.....
