There is nothing new about suicide but the rate seems to have gone up considerably in the last 15-20 years in the UK , north America and Australia and it is not just middle aged men it is happening to, but both genders even in their twenties although for women there is greater rate of unsuccessful attempts. Something has changed over the last few decades. Before I go any further I am not endorsing the use of cigarettes and these days as an ex –smoker I loathe the smell of cigarette smoke. I think it would be fair to say that cigarettes are not purely recreational but have an anti-depressant function. This what makes cigarettes so addictive. I managed to give up smoking when I worked out ten years ago that lactose free low fat milk was giving me haemorrhoids I decided to go the other way and switched to buying butter. When I discovered the WAPF website it all rang true with me. A few months after I switched to butter I was recycling cigarette butts so many times and decided it was all disgusting I gave up. Prior to that you name it I tried it: anti-depressants , St johns wort etc. We have also had the rise of the low fat and low salt dogma. There is a problem with both these theories as they are both associated with depression. In my experience faux fats are also associated with depression and faux fats are diametrically opposite to traditional fats in their effects on the human body. I am not sure about the origins of the low salt dogma but I think it would be reasonable to say the agenda behind low fat campaigns is the huge world surplus of skimmed milk powder. The US Government buys up skimmed milk powder as a back door subsidy as there is votes in it. They have 600,000 tons of skimmed milk powder in storage. So much for the free market economy. This what you have when politicians run the government. If you look at France and Japan where the bureaucrats run the government, both countries have kept their food fairly traditional, have the best intercity trains in the world and are civilized places to live in. Post postmortems on suicide victims usually show low cholesterol levels. The introduction of statins has a great deal to answer for. Fast forward to the present day there is now legislation on plain packaging health warnings on cigarettes and the retail display of cigarettes. All very noble motives but the Federal Government needs to look at the areas of phasing put margarine production and reviewing the prescription of statins. There is a NGO called Beyond Blue that was set up to discourage people from committing suicide. I contacted them and received a considered reply and they thought my idea had some merit.
I'm not getting your point. However, rise of suicide numbers are due to many reasons not the least of which is higher quality of reporting statistics.
