Hey guys....so, another "Did I do the right thing here" thread from me.

I'm at my gym (Planet Fitness in Austin) the other day, in the lockerroom, getting changed from street clothes to work out togs before my workout. I am sitting on the bench in front of my locker, putting my shoes on. I need to add here, that the ENTIRE lockerroom is empty. And it is pretty big. Probably a couple hundred lockers, two different sections..maybe 500 square feet or so..

So this dude comes over and sits down right next to me. I mean, like about two feet away. I just think this is too weird, and I have to say something. So I do. I go....."Dude. Really? You have the whole lockerroom and you need to sit right here? That's kinda weird, don't ya think?"

Well he goes into this huge rant about how some of the lockers don't lock properly, and he knows from before that one that does is the one he chose. And how he's "not a fag" and that I over-reacted and am "a homophobe." I just walk away out to the gym floor and say.."Yeah, whatever, man. Stay away from me."

Now....he DID show me how one latch on one locker, which was several down from us, did NOT work so as to allow a padlock to lock it. But still....there were, as I said....dozens of lockers all over.

So....did I do the right thing in conveying my annoyance at him plopping down next to me in an empty lockerroom? Or did I over-react. Would you have said anything?

    Thanks for your responses.

    Chris

I think you overreacted, but not by much. People need to be more aware of spacial boundaries. I noticed this in customs last month when I was in London. The woman behind me in line kept bumping into my suitcase she was so close.

Sometimes it's a cultural issue. They don't have the same feelings about the same things! It's really interesting if you think about it. I'm studying sociology though, so maybe more interesting to me than to others.

Anyway, I work out at a Planet Fitness too! :)

I understand why you were annoyed, I am weird about personal space.

Personally I would have reacted a bit passive aggressively, maybe am eye roll and an audible sigh. But that's just me, we all have our way

You know what I hate? When I'm in a stall in a public restroom with multiple stalls that are all empty...and someone comes in the one directly beside mine. I LOVE peeing less than a foot away from someone, seperated by particle board. So awesome.

I don't know if I would have been annoyed by that. It would have depended on the mood I was in ...If i was in a bad mood already and she sent out bad or weird vibes.......and I was annoyed, I would not have said anything, but gotten the hell out of there in a flash....Now, if that is not sending a silent message, but, no, I don't usually say anything to people I get annoyed with.......I don't like confrontation..........On a good day, or her vibe was just normal and friendly.... I probably would have thought, the person just gravitated to where there was someone else......and was a lonely sort or something, and I would not have thought much of it. Depending on how she acted, i might have even started a conversation with her.....

I notice almost EVERY time, though......I could go somewhere where there is a a HUGE parking lot....with so many opened spaces, but a car has to come along and almost side swipe our car to park almost on top of our car. What is THAT all about?.

You did nothing wrong. A lot of people don't understand locker room etiquette. And this guy was one of them.

You didn't handle the situation 100% perfectly, but you could of handled it a lot worse tbf...a better a way would have been to have made a bit of a joke of his slightly odd behaviour, most normal people will respond to that quite well and adjust their behaviour accordingly. A lil levity and good humour goes a long way in taking the edge out of a an awkward situation.

isn't planet fitness the one that has that as their business model? "join our gym and never come back, but it's so cheap that you won't cancel"?

anyway, was he old? something about locker rooms brings out the gay in old guys. i've long lost count of the number of old penises that were flopped at me during locker room conversations. i've learned to change quickly myself, because when the old guys see me naked they think that there is no better time to call me over to point out some minor maintenance issue that could very easily wait 1 minute for me to put my pants on.

I know what you mean about the old dudes. They innocently just don't know any better. They'll stand or sit six inches from you with their shriveled junk hanging out. LOL but no...this dude was about my age, which is late thirties. He was also Hispanic.

    Your such a Dick!
Who cares why he sat near you. Maybe he wanted to chat and make friends?
Your clearly not approachable, you should wear a sign saying, don't talk to me, I'm a Dick!

i'd have to say this is one of the reasons i'm not into the whole gym scene. or spa or whatever.
although for me, its the same like with bars; i'm just not interested either.
one of the reasons i hated p.e. being a required subject/period in high school,
whatever you might otherwise think about the idea that kids need to get some exercise.
i get mine walking to the grocery store and back
(though i ride part of the way on the bus if its more then ten large city commercial blocks).

i don't always want to chase everyone away all the time, but,
no one has a right to rob someone else of their freedom of thought by demanding their attention.

no one, ever. unless maybe they're a first responder of some kind and there's a situation where they actually need to.
like if you're in immediate danger or breaking some law or something, but otherwise,

inflicting themselves on someone else's space like that is completely inexcusable,
and that idiot needs to realize he's seriously lucky you didn't just haul off and deck the bastard.

on the bus that's different. there are only so many seats and if somebody wants to sit down,
they're as welcome to the seat next to me as any other.

as long as they're not demanding my attention with some kind of fascist political bullshit.

I get the "guy code" of keeping distance at times like this. But it seems kind of odd for you to say something. Eyes forward and get dressed. Who cares what he is doing?

by old guy i think you mean old street person. i'm an old guy and there's no way in hell i'd ever pull that crap.
different people are different ways, and that's fine. but different ways doesn't legitimately include inconsiderateness.

  17. I don't go to the gym and generally avoid men's locker rooms because they're gross, but I wouldn't have said anything. I've literally had an old man stroke my leg before and I just politely excused myself. I don't like to make assumptions and men generally aren't thinking creatures, so I definitely wouldn't have made an assumption of a man. But I guess it depends on the man. Like, was this guy like Grizzly Adams? In that case I wouldn't have said anything. I would have just thought he was some crazed lunatic who hadn't even noticed me sitting there.

who cares when he isn't obviously demanding attention. problem is when they are, that doesn't always work.
