The impressive thing about this animation is that is running on an old PS3. Quantic Dreams specializes in full body motion capture and rendering realistic animations on limited hardware. What was merely a tech demo has turned into what is arguably the first full length interactive movie ever made, "Detroit Become Human", which will be released on the PS4 on May 25th. The video game is an open world RPG, has over two thousand pages of script, three main characters to choose from with very different stories, hundreds of actors and, of course, their own sound track. Rather than turning a movie like Star Wars into a video game, video games are now becoming movies and it is the film makers who must adapt to the new technology. A lot of video games already imitate Hollywood cinematography, but what is required for virtual reality is a first person perspective and an open world RPG requires an enormous amount of content, including a large cast of characters, or it resembles an empty shell. Already the budgets for video games are beginning to rival Hollywood block busters, and the ability to combine the two in ways nobody has thought of before is far too tempting.
This trailer highlights the main theme of the video game, of an ongoing android revolution. The characters mouths may seem to move a little funny, but this is actually a way of making them more realistic appearing in a wide variety of different languages, as well as, making it easier for PS4 to render the characters. We'll have to wait and see how great the game is, but I'd say its pretty obvious from the amount of money they are spending on it this is a long term investment and they intend to do whatever it takes to make the game a success. Bethesda is currently building an entirely new engine for their games, including the Fallout series, and we may see a number of different video game manufactures combining their efforts with with big budget Hollywood film studios.
