First of all, was there anything important on the HD? If not make a Windows 10 installation usb or cd from another computer, just google it and follow Microsoft instructions. It's pretty idiot proof. You do not even need a key, but there will be an activate nag watermark on the screen.

If there was some important files, I would recommend pulling out the HD and replace it. Save the Vista drive and take it to someone who knows what the fuck they're doing to scan, recover and backup your files.

Yes, this might be the best course of action now. Windows Vista is, after all, End-of-life by Microsoft, meaning they don't even support it anymore. An OS upgrade might be in order at this point, even if Win10 does come with its own baggage. Vista is slowly losing software support.

Vista was intended as a temporary band-aid, for 64 bit computing. Every MS operating system merely pushes the limits of the current hardware to add all the bells and whistles they can think of, but the hardware is now becoming more powerful than any operating system anyone needs. So powerful, that its silly for MS to keep inventing new operating systems for the hardware, and they plan to use AI to run open source Linux and Unix, instead of writing a new operating system for every box made.
