What do you think defines a person as evil. Not people you think are evil (by name), but qualities or atributes that define them as evil.

    I don't believe in evil.

I mean, whats our societys patriarch of evil?

Little red guy with horns? He's a gonna poke ya! [IMG]

Maybe want some candy in October? Lookout evil!

Evils an archaic notion, most people that you'd call evil are mentally deranged, in the next hundred years well probably come up with a very good profile of antisocial behavior in children and treat most of these evil people.

The definition of 'Evil' and who society and the perception of 'evil' changes and your right it might be just 'deranged people'..thats not the point imho.

We use language as a expression of our thoughts.. If i think something is 'evil' then thats 'evil' too me.. I don't imagine a little red devil, cuz i know a little better than that from reading who the 'devil' is supposed to be.. It is just a word that has come to define something.. like every other word [true or not].

Of course its a word that defines something... and I feel that the something that defines the word 'evil' is hollow.

I don't belive in 'good' either, so debating this won't get us anywhere. [IMG]

1: Evil is anyone who does intensional harm to me or mine! *WEG*

2: Evil is the doing of harm to another for your own enjoyment and/or profit.

What if the person was a pedophile? I would enjoy harming him in unsavoury ways. Does that make me evil or a hero?

Ah yes, the grey fuzzy areas! Would your enjoyment of the act be your primary motavation or a perk?

I don't think I would have a primary motivation. It's more of an instinct isn't it?

So you are saying it would be a reflex reaction without premeditation and your enjoyment of the act would be a sideeffect/perk?

interesting question.. i don't believe in good or evil, just many degrees in between. like somebody else said, the word means something different to different ppl... what's evil in your eyes could be normal in another's, or even "good"

i used to think ppl who purposefully hurt and manipulate others are the epitomy of evil, but maybe they just know what they want. lol i'm j/k i don't advocate violence, and i think ppl who are like that are just deranged... i think i'm agreeing with lodui on a lot of these.

I do not believe either good or evil exists in the 'physical' sense of the word. It's a bit like time, at least the linear time system the Western society adheres to: the fact that time moves on in a straight line with minutes, hours, days and years, has been made up by humans to facilitate structuring your life. Good and evil are terms made up to keep order, manipulate people, create a bond between people by giving them something to fight for together. It may exist in our minds but it does not in physical reality.

When I think of 'evil', I think the purposeful harming of a human being, physically or mentally, directly or indirectly, would mean to me that that person is, not evil, but something more neutral. A threat. My subconscious will change that to 'evil' anyway, that's how the mind's been trained over the millennia. But universally speaking, it's nonexistent.
