Recently I watched this thing on Much More Music..where they were ranking the best metal bands...Deep Purple were number 18...I PERSONALLY disagree....i think they should at LEAST be one of the top 10...they were real awesome....

    what do you think?

Deep purple is a nice color for metal, but I prefer gold.
Personally deep purple should be right between sky blue and emerald green, although ofcourse emerald is not a metal, but a precious stone.

    Love, bird.

They have some very depressing songs like "Child In Time" and "Soldier Of Fortune". I like bands with depressing songs.

I think that they are great. On 19th July I went on ther concert in Macedonia. Althout they weren't in their original band (two of the members werw diferent), bur Gilan was there. It was apsolutly great!

I love them. They're great, but metal is a large genre.

I've listened to "In Rock" and "Machine Head" and I like "In Rock" better. It's also more depressed sounding and progressive. I haven't listened to "Stormbringer".

I saw them this past June and I surprizingly got to go backstage...so anyway it was Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice (these three were part of the original dp members) and Don Airey(who played with a lot of different awesome bands) and Steve Morse...who's pretty cool....

i love the seventies albums with Ian Gillan but the ones with the guy from Whitesnake are mediocre at best...the only later album I have is "The Battle Rages On" and i'm not too keen on that one either so i can live with a spot in the top 20.

do you have the complete list? would be interesting to see which bands ended above Deep Purple. (wouldn't surprise me if lesser acts like Motley Crue,Van Halen and Aerosmith made the top 10 :( )

When I was about 15 they were my idols - and I still think the classic line up of Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Glover and Paice was one of the best rock bands ever, esp. from a technichal musical point of view - no doubt in part a result of Jon Lord's classical background, and Ian Paice's experience as a jazz drummer. All great musicians.

I kind of went off them after the line up changed. The only later Purple album I half like is 'Slaves and Masters'.
My fave is still 'In Rock' - but it sounds much better IMHO on the original vinyl record than the CD.
I also quite like Blackmore's new band Blackmore's Night. Also heard recently some new stuff written by Jon Lord - 'Pictured Within' - nothing at all like Purple, but still quite interesting.

Did you know that Deep Purple wanted the song "Never Before" to be the hit from Machine Head album but the record company didn't agree. Apparently Deep Purple thought that "Never Before" was the best song from Machine Head. I agree, "Never Before" is my favorite song from that album.

machine head should be required listening.

I dig Perfect Strangers, House of the Blue Light, Slaves, as well as the early stuff. The first Lp is great, and they have some of the best players in the biz. Plus, Ian can really wail! Not to mention he was christ in Superstar.

Machine Head fucking sucks in my opinion. Anyhting with Gillan sucks imo. I like their ealier stuff. The self-titled album is the best by far. Just listen to the vocals and the harmonic guitar playing compared to the treble-jacked garbage of the latter.

Deep Purple is a great band...I love the 60's stuff a lot...
but the early 70's line up, with Ian Gillian, I enjoy the best...
although, I wouldn't label them a heavy metal band...
more like a hard rock band...
and in my opinion, Ritchie Blackmore is one of rock's best guitarist.

Here's a list of my favorite Purple songs...
and would make a nice 'best of' CD...
and of course, it would have to be a double disc :) ...

    Speed King
    Fireball
    Bloodsucker
    Hush
    Strange Kind Of Woman
    Highway Star (live version rules!!)
    Love Help Me
    Child In Time
    Perfect Strangers
    Rat Bat Blue
    Stormbringer
    Kentucky Woman
    Lazy
    One More Rainy Day
    Lady Double Dealer
    Hard Lovin' Man
    Wring That Neck (excellent instrumental)
    Never Before
    Blind
    Woman From Tokyo
    Mistreated (Live)
    No No No
    River Deep,Mountain High
    Lalena (awesome Donovan cover)
    Black Night
    Knocking At Your Back Door
Smoke On The Water (live version is the best)
