I might be wrong with this but I have just read somewhere that people still have their cats declaw removed. Are you fucking kidding me - people still have that done. They still put their cats through an operation they dont even need.

I dont know anyone who has had that done - why do people have it done?

because people are that fucking ignorant.

in europe declawing cats is illegal. there is a morning talk show here called rick and bubba (two ignorant rednecks) and they have these two interns who come on the show and they are known for being big "animal lovers" and rescuing dogs and cats. well i was listening to them talk about a cat they rescued one day and they said "................just as soon as we get him declawed." !!!! they also keep all their dogs OUTSIDE all of the time. im sorry but loving animals in the true sense is doing and wanting what is in their best interest, not yours. if you dont want a cat scratching on the furniture than dont have a cat plain and simple. or see if you can find another way around it. my couch is clawed to death actually. my cat doesnt claw it anymore (only once in a while) but when we first brought him home all the cat posts in the world coudnt stop him from tearing up our couch........its just a freaking couch and it can be replaced.

This is horrible animal abuse isnt it? It makes me so sad... declawing causes behavioral problems and arthritis... POOR KITTIES... I got both of my cats from the humane society... they were surrendered because the owners daughter was severly allergic to them... but they had these wonderful sweet cats FOUR PAW DECLAWED.... its awful.. teh poor kitties.... I always feel so bad for them htey are such sweet loving cats... There is no need to declaw cats... you can teach a cat to use a post. People are stupid.

I remember our furniture when I was a kid. Just hung in threads, but the cats were more important, just as Newt is to me now. She likes to scratch and play with buttons on the chairs, in fact we all derive a lot of pleasure from her antics. Can always chuck a throw over them!

My cats have destroyed most of my mother's furniture. Luckily we have learned how to re-upholster, since everything gets destroyed every few years.
I hate people who think that an animal is just supposed to lay around and do nothing all day. God forbid if an animal is an inconvienence for you. I would do anything for my animals. We had a stray cat that I stepped in front of a bus to save. My animals are not "pets" they are members of my family! Although children seems to be an inconvience to most parents these days. That's why they make daycare, televisions and the internet right?

People mutilating their animals to convenience or because they think they should look a certain way is unacceptable (this includes ear and tail docking). I am so sick of this shit. A relative just did that to her cat I am so mad about it. I had even sent an email with info about why NOT to do it, etc. I do not suddenly dislike this relative, I just think it is an awful thing to do. And also it is not HER body to mess with.

Get a scratching post! It may take a few times because some cats don't like certain ones. (My cat Brina likes her cardboard one but won't touch the rope one) My cat Turbo really like this kind we got him. It was kind of a rope wrapped around a base and we would praise him and tell him how good he was every time he used it. It even got to the point where he would go to the post, scratch it, and look at us because he wanted to hear "Good boy, Turbo!". So that worked. There are options otehr than ripping the claws out of a paw that it NOT YOURS.

The only time I think its appropriate to remove something from a pet is when they have some thing that is causing them pain. Like for instance, my dog had this one duclaw that was for some reason hanging off his leg. It was getting caught on absolutely everything, and eventually I got it removed because it was starting to bleed when he caught it on things and he was always limping around after.

Seriously, declawing your cats is like removing human fingernails.

Badwolf, I do not feel your situation is anyhing like what most people get their cats declawed for. There is nothing ethically wrong with what you did and I think your dog, if he was in pain, is glad to be rid of that claw.

I personally have 6 indoor cats and NONE of my cats are declawed and never will be. The ONLY time I would ever have something removed from them is for medical reasons. My old girl had to have surgery because she had Cancer. She had a lump on her face (right under her eye) and one right between her shoulder blades. I had a cat in the past that had to have a leg and his tail cut off because he got into an accident of some sort (he was an outside kitty :( at my parents house). I thought my old girl might have to have her duclaw (sp?) removed, but the vet said it was okay. Yay! I would have had it removed if it had been necessary though.

I know people that still declaw their cats. I hate it.

I have 4 different scratching posts for my kitties and some still prefer the couch and the carpet! I had another scratching post too, but gave it to my aunt because she was about to kill her new kitty for scratching up her couch! Saved that kitty!

Sure, I would love to have a nice new good looking couch. BUT I figure as long as I have kitties that scratch things, I will just continue to get my couches from Goodwill. Not only is it okay for the kitties, but I am recycling couches! :D

    Okay, enough about my kitties.

    Jess.

I dont believe people know people - over here alot of people dont even know what it is!!!!! But im sure if they did a few would get it done!

Its really bad because if you want a cat they WILL scratch things, they will scratch people - thats just something you have to deal with,

Even my sister she has a 7 month old baby and he lovesssss the cats tails!! And one of the cats will tell him when he has pulled to hard but scratching him - and she said well the baby has to learn which is true - he does.

Yeah, I wish I did not know anyone that has their kitties declawed, especially just because they want to. I bet there would be people that would have it done if they knew about it!

I bet your sister has people that judge her badly about having a cat and a baby! So many people hate that and think it is irresponsible. I think kids should learn at an early age to respect and love animals myself. You cannot do that very easily if they are not around them. I think it is great that she is teaching your nephew at an early age! He will grow up to love and respect animals.

What kind of cat does she have? Do you have pets?

    Jess.

I really disagree with people who declaw their cats because of behavioral problems. Most cats if raised properly from a kitten will learn very quickly no to use their claws on humans even when playing. Alot of people thinks its cute when a tiny kitten is using their little butter claws on them. That kind of hand play with the kitten rewards its urge to use claws. So when the kitten gets older and its claws get harder and stronger it uses them on the owners. It isnt cute anymore, and its painful so they get the kitten declawed.
Also people need to get a scatching post, and reward their kitten everytime they use it. If they catch the cat scratching something it shouldnt they should have a soda can with pennies or rocks to shake when the cat starts to mutilate the furniture. That will scare the cat,and the cat will learn that a weird bad sound happens when it even thinks about scratching the furniture.

I think many people are simply too lazy to clip their cat's claws, also. It takes 5 minutes, if that. Yes, some are difficult (my cat incuded!) but if you wrap the cat in a towel and hold it while another person clips, it is easier. Cats NEED their claws.

Alright, I'm gonna be the only opposing voice here. Where did you guys hear that it hurts the cat? The day mine got home from getting it done it didn't wimper or walk softly or anything. It acted just the same as before the procedure. I don't want to read all this feeling bad crap. I want solid evidence that it hurts the cat.

On to the couch thing. It must be nice to have all this money to replace couches every year. Are you forgetting how much furniture is? Some of it can go higher than $2000. So I should buy some shitty furniture just to accomidate my cat? No, that's not me. I bust my ass for a living to support a family and expensive bills. Cats don't do anything but sit in windows and stink the house up with litter. If that sounds harsh, then that is your problem but it's the truth.

I was even thinking about getting its teeth removed because it bites people.

    LOL kidding.

You shouldnt have a cat. Obviously your cat is a terror, and you really do not know how to handle it. It probably bites people because you are an arseshole, and treated it badly.

You can train your cat to not shred furniture, play nicely, not bite, and learn not use its claws on people. However it may be too late with your cat because its bad behavior patterns may be imbedded to deeply.

I hope you are joking about getting its teeth removed, or you are nothing but a troll.

My cat isn't declawed. We are currently living with my parents. They have brand new furniture. Mom said "declaw you cat or you aren't living with us".

    The solution?

A product called Soft Paws. They are little acrylic sheaths that you glue over your cats existing claw. The cat can't scratch the furniture to bits, and they grow out in 1-3 months. The cat still has his claws, they are just on a little vacation. He doesn't mind them, and they make my Mom happy.

All is good in kitty land once again.

That douchbag above was banned, so don't even worry about replying to him.

About Soft Paws- I have not used them. Just be sure they are the right size because cats retract their claws- you must make sure that it isn't hurting them to put their claws back in their feet. Otherwise, I'd saw go for it.
